Chapter 2 - The Silent Contract

Word Count: ~3,500 words
The silence that followed the departure of Viktor and the guards was deafening. Damian lowered his weapon, the effort draining the last of his remaining strength. He sank back into the pillows, his breathing shallow, a deep purple hue tinting his lips.
Mara stood frozen, holding Lila tightly against her chest. She wanted to run, to flee through the rain and never look back at Grayhaven House. But she knew the rules of the underworld: you don't run from a Volkov. If you try, they find you before you reach the city limits.
"What is her name?" Damian asked, his eyes closed, his chest rising and falling painfully.
"L-Lila, sir," Mara stammered.
"Lila," Damian repeated, testing the name on his tongue. "She felt it. Before I could even realize my own heart was skipping, she put her hand right where the pain was. How?"
Mara swallowed hard, comforting Lila, who was busy playing with the zipper of her mother's jacket. "Lila has been deaf since birth, Mr. Volkov. Because she cannot hear, she relies entirely on touch and vibration. When she was a baby, she used to sleep with her chest pressed against mine just to feel my heartbeat. She... she can read people through their pulse. She knows when someone is scared, when someone is angry... and when someone is hurting."
Damian let out a dry, humorless chuckle that turned into a harsh coughing fit. Mara instinctively reached for the glass of water on the nightstand, but stopped herself. Damian noticed her hesitation.
"Give it to me," he commanded softly.
Mara carefully handed him the glass. He drank it slowly, his eyes never leaving her. When he finished, he set the glass down with a heavy thud.
"Every nurse my brother hires tries to inject me with sedatives that make my mind cloudy," Damian said, his voice dripping with venom. "Every doctor tells me it's a matter of weeks. They want me weak so they can carve up my empire. But I am not ready to die. Not until I find out who put that poison in my glass." He looked directly into Mara's eyes. "I am firing the medical staff. Effective immediately. You and your daughter are going to move into the east wing."
Mara’s heart plummeted. "Sir? I—I'm just a maid! I don't know anything about medicine! I can't save your life!"
"The doctors are trying to end my life, woman," Damian snarled softly, his gaze shifting to Lila. "Your daughter is the only creature in this cursed house who doesn't want me dead. She will be my ears. She will feel the vibrations of this house. And you will be the only one allowed to prepare my food and administer my medication. I will pay you ten times your current salary. If I live, you and your daughter will be taken care of for the rest of your lives. You will want for nothing."
"And if you die?" Mara whispered, terrified of the answer.
Damian’s eyes darkened to the color of a stormy sea. "If I die, my brother Viktor takes the throne. And the first thing he will do is eliminate anyone who stood in his way—including the maid and the child who saw too much. Your survival is tied to mine now, Mara."
The reality of the trap closed around her. She had no choice. To refuse was death; to accept was a dangerous gamble on the life of a dying tyrant.
That evening, Mara and Lila were moved into a luxurious suite directly connected to Damian’s master bedroom. The transition was immediate and tense. The rest of the household staff looked at Mara with a mixture of envy and pity. They whispered in the hallways, calling her the "Witch's Servant," believing she had used her child to cast a spell on the fading Don.
At midnight, a soft tapping on the adjoining door woke Mara.
She opened it to find Damian sitting in a wheelchair, his face shadowed. Lila was already awake, sitting up in her bed. Without a word, the little girl climbed out of bed and walked over to Damian, placing her small hand on his knee, feeling the slight tremor in his muscles.
"Someone is in the study downstairs," Damian whispered, his eyes locked on Lila. "The guards are supposed to be patrolling the perimeter, not the interior. Lila... look at her, Mara. What does she feel?"
Lila suddenly froze. Her eyes widened, and she looked toward the floorboards. She grabbed Damian’s hand and pressed it against the wooden floor. Then, she shook her head vigorously, a look of pure distress on her face. She closed her eyes and began to mimic a heavy, rhythmic thumping with her fist against her own chest—fast, frantic, terrified.
Mara gasped. "She feels heavy footsteps. Multiple people. And whoever they are... their hearts are racing. They're pumped with adrenaline."

Damian’s face contorted into a cold, lethal mask. "An assassination squad. Inside my house."
HOOK: Before Damian could reach for his weapon, the power to the entire estate cut out, plunging Grayhaven House into pitch-black darkness. From the hallway outside, the muffled silencer shots of automatic weapons began to echo, accompanied by the heavy thud of falling bodies. The killers weren't coming for the empire—they were coming directly to the east wing to finish the Don.
