Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Bloodline

Word Count: ~3,500 words

The atmosphere within Grayhaven House shifted from a tense cold war to an absolute lockdown. Damian stripped Viktor of his command over the Baltimore sectors, confining him to the west wing under heavy guard. But the threat was far from over. The syndicate was fracturing; rival families, sensing Damian's weakness, were beginning to encroach on their territory.

For Mara and Lila, life became a gilded prison. They were safe within Damian’s sight, but the weight of the underworld was crushing.

Every morning, Lila would walk into Damian’s room. She would perform her "diagnostic." She would sit on his lap, place her tiny palm against his chest, and close her eyes. If she smiled, Mara knew the medication was working. If she frowned, Mara would adjust the dosage of the cardiac stimulants. To the hardened guards who stood outside the door, it was a bizarre, almost surreal sight: the terrifying Don Volkov, a man who had never shown mercy, allowing a deaf four-year-old girl to dictate his daily survival.

One afternoon, Damian was sitting at his grand desk, reviewing financial ledgers, when a knock came at the door. It was Dr. Jonathan Vance, the family's chief medical officer who had been banished from the east wing weeks ago. He was accompanied by two high-ranking capos of the Volkov family.

"Damian, please," Dr. Vance said, holding up a medical file. "I know you've lost faith in me, but the toxicology reports from the independent lab just came back. We found the source of the poison. It wasn't the wine."

Damian raised an eyebrow, his hand dropping beneath the desk where his revolver rested. "Oh? Enlighten me, Doctor."

"It's a localized, airborne toxin," Dr. Vance explained, stepping closer. "It was embedded in the filters of the HVAC system in your private study. It was designed to release only when the heat was turned up during the winter months. That's why it took so long to affect you. Viktor couldn't have done it alone—he didn't have access to the secure maintenance codes for your private quarters."

The two capos stepped forward, their faces grim. "Boss, if this is true, it means someone with master security clearance set this up. Someone who has been with you for over a decade. We need to audit the entire inner circle."

Damian remained silent, his face unreadable. He looked down at Lila, who was playing with some building blocks on the rug near his desk.

The moment Dr. Vance had entered the room, Lila had stopped playing. She didn't look at the doctor. Instead, she had walked over to the older of the two capos—a man named Marco, who had been Damian’s personal driver and confidant for fifteen years, a man who had walked Mara and Lila into the mansion on their very first day.

Lila crouched down, placing her hand gently on Marco’s polished leather shoe.

Marco smiled down at her, a warm, grandfatherly expression. "Hello, little one," he said softly.

But Lila suddenly recoiled as if she had been burned. She scrambled backward, her eyes wide with terror. She ran to Mara, grabbing her skirt, her tiny body shaking violently. She began to tap her chest furiously, then pointed at Marco, making a choking motion around her own neck.

Mara’s breath caught in her throat. She looked at Damian, her eyes filled with dread. "Damian... she... she says Marco's heart is a thunderstorm. She says... he smells like the poison."

Marco’s warm expression didn't change, but his eyes turned dead. "Don Damian, surely you aren't going to believe a maid's child over fifteen years of loyalty. I drove you away from the car bomb in Philly. I took a bullet for you in Miami."

Damian looked at Marco, his oldest friend. The silence stretched for an agonizing minute.

"You did, Marco," Damian said softly, his voice heavy with a profound, breaking sorrow. "You took a bullet for me in Miami. And that's why I gave you the master codes to my private quarters. Because I trusted you more than my own brother."

Marco’s hand subtly twitched toward his jacket.

Before he could draw, Damian fired through the wood of his desk. The bullet shattered Marco’s knee, sending the veteran capo crashing to the floor with a roar of agony. The other capo and Dr. Vance instantly drew their weapons, pointing them at Marco.

"Why?" Damian asked, his voice dead, devoid of all emotion.

Marco laughed through his pain, blood dripping from his lips. "Because you became soft, Damian! You fell in love with the legitimate world! You wanted to move the syndicate into real estate, into clean money! The rest of us... we are wolves! We don't want clean money! Viktor promised us the old ways! He promised we would rule Baltimore with iron and blood!" Marco spit on the floor. "And that brat... that freak child... she ruined everything! She's the only reason you're still breathing!"

HOOK: As the guards dragged Marco away to the basement, he screamed a final, chilling warning: "You think you've won, Damian?! Viktor already sold the shipping manifests to the Corradi family! They are coming tonight with a private army to wipe out Grayhaven, and your little human heart monitor won't be able to save you from a missile!"
