Chapter 5 - The Night of the Crimson Rain

Word Count: ~3,500 words

The warning wasn't a bluff. By 8:00 PM, a massive thunderstorm rolled over Baltimore, masking the approach of three armored SUVs belonging to the Corradi family—the Volkovs' most brutal rivals. Viktor’s betrayal had been total. He hadn't just tried to poison his brother; he had sold out the entire family's defense infrastructure. The security cameras went dark, the automated gates opened, and the perimeter guards were executed silently in the pouring rain.

Inside the mansion, the air was electric with tension. Damian, now fully aware of the scope of the treason, ordered the remaining loyal soldiers to barricade the lower floors.

"Mara," Damian said, standing by the window of his study, watching the headlights of the approaching SUVs slice through the darkness. He looked stronger today, the correct medication finally flushing the poison from his system, but he was still a long way from full recovery. "There is an underground escape tunnel beneath the wine cellar. It leads to a safehouse two miles away. I want you and Lila to take it. Now."

Mara shook her head, tears blurring her vision. "What about you? You can't fight a war in your condition!"

"This is my house, Mara. My empire," Damian said, a dark, regal smile touching his lips. "A Don does not run from his own home. I will hold them here. If I survive, I will find you. If I don't... the keys to a Swiss bank account are in the pocket of your coat. Take Lila and disappear."

Before Mara could protest, Lila walked up to Damian. She didn't let him push her away. She grabbed his large, scarred hand and held it tightly against her cheek. She closed her eyes, feeling the steady, rhythmic boom of his heart. It was fast, filled with combat adrenaline, but it was steady. The irregular flutter was gone.

She looked up at him, her eyes fierce, and shook her head. She pointed to the floor, then to him, then to herself. She wasn't leaving.

"She says you are strong enough now," Mara whispered, wiping her tears. "She says she won't leave her patient."

Damian stared at the little girl, a profound wave of emotion breaking through his icy exterior. For twenty years, he had been surrounded by people who wanted to kill him, use him, or betray him. This child, who couldn't hear a single word he said, had looked into his soul and decided he was worth saving.

"Fine," Damian growled, a fierce, protective warmth erupting in his chest. "Then we fight together."

The front doors of the mansion exploded.

The assault was brutal. The Corradi soldiers, heavily armed and numerical superior, pushed through the foyer, engaging Damian's loyal guards in a vicious, close-quarters firefight. The mansion echoed with the horrific symphony of war.

Damian led Mara and Lila through the secondary hallways of the upper floor, using his intimate knowledge of the house to ambush Corradi hitmen from the shadows. He moved like a ghost, his silenced pistol claiming life after life with cold, mechanical efficiency.

But as they reached the central grand staircase, a voice mocked them from below.

"Damian! It's over, big brother!"

It was Viktor. He stood at the bottom of the stairs, surrounded by six heavily armed Corradi mercenaries. He held a detonator in his hand.

"I've rigged the structural pillars of the east wing," Viktor shouted, his face twisted in psychotic glee. "If I don't walk out of here as the Don, nobody walks out! Give me the master ledger, Damian! Give me the codes to the offshore accounts, and maybe I'll let your little maid and her brat walk!"

Damian stood at the top of the stairs, keeping Mara and Lila behind his broad frame. "You always were a fool, Viktor. You think the Corradi family will let you rule? The moment I'm dead, they will butcher you like a dog and take Baltimore for themselves."

"Shut up! Shut up!" Viktor roared, his finger tightening on the detonator.

Suddenly, Lila stepped out from behind Damian.

She looked at Viktor, then she looked at the walls, then she closed her eyes. Through the soles of her feet, she felt a strange, high-frequency hum running through the structural steel of the mansion. It wasn't the vibration of the storm. It wasn't the footsteps of the soldiers. It was something else—a mechanical countdown. The bombs weren't waiting for the detonator. Viktor had been tricked by the Corradis; the explosives were on a hardwired timer set to go off in exactly sixty seconds to eliminate everyone inside, including Viktor.

Lila frantically grabbed Damian's hand. She pointed to the floor, then she opened her hands wide and made an explosion sound with her mouth, her face pale with horror. She held up her fingers—showing five, then dropping them.

Less than a minute.

Damian’s eyes widened. He didn't waste a second. "Viktor, you idiot! The Corradis played you! The bombs are already ticking!"

Viktor blinked, confused, looking down at his detonator. "What? No, that's impossible—"

HOOK: Before Viktor could finish his sentence, one of the Corradi mercenaries turned his weapon and shot Viktor directly in the chest, dropping him to the floor. The mercenary smiled up at Damian. "The Don sends his regards, Volkov. Die with your house." But as the mercenary raised his rifle to shoot Damian, Lila did something completely unexpected that changed the trajectory of the entire war.
