Chapter 7 - The Unthinkable Step

For a full minute, the room was dead silent, save for the ragged breathing of the child and the hum of the overhead lights.
Sophia lay panting, her face flushed, tears staining her cheeks.
“Can you feel your toes?” Clara asked softly, pointing down toward the end of the examination table.
Sophia stared down at her legs, hidden beneath the white sheet. She closed her eyes, biting her lower lip.
“They... they feel hot,” Sophia whispered, her voice trembling. “Like they’re full of pins and needles.”
“That’s the blood rushing back,” Clara said, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. “That’s life returning to the nerves. Now... sit her up.”
Lorenzo gently hoisted his daughter into an upright sitting position on the edge of the table, his eyes burning into Clara’s face with a lethal intensity.
“If she doesn't stand,” Lorenzo whispered, the threat in his voice hanging like a guillotine blade, “you die right here.”
“She’ll stand,” Clara said, though her own knees felt weak. She stepped in front of Sophia, kneeling down on the cold floor and holding out both of her hands. “Sophia. Look at me. Forget about the wheelchairs, forget about the doctors, forget about everything. Look at my hands.”
Sophia locked her dark eyes onto Clara’s.
“Now,” Clara commanded softly, her voice filled with an unshakeable authority. “Push off the table. Put your weight on your heels. Stand up.”
Sophia let out a ragged breath. She leaned forward, her small muscles straining with an intensity that made her entire body shake.
Lorenzo watched, his hand hovering near his holster, his breath suspended in his throat.
Slowly—impossibly—Sophia’s feet slid off the edge of the table. Her sneakers touched the cold linoleum floor.
Her legs trembled violently, shaking like two dry twigs in a hurricane. For a heart-stopping second, her knees buckled inward.
“I got you,” Clara urged, gripping Sophia’s waist and forearms to guide her balance. “Push! Use your own core! Up!”
Sophia let out a fierce, determined cry—a sound of pure, unadulterated willpower inherited from the most feared man in New Jersey.
Her knees locked.

Her spine straightened.
She was standing.
