Chapter 8 - The Empire Collapses

The silence in the room was absolute.

Sophia Moretti—declared permanently paralyzed by twenty-two world-renowned specialists, wheelchair-bound for three agonizing years—was standing on her own two feet, her small hands clutching Clara’s shoulders for balance.

Tears spilled over Lorenzo Moretti’s hard, weathered cheeks—the first tears he had shed since the night his wife died. He dropped to his knees in front of his daughter, burying his face against her waist, wrapping his massive arms around her legs as if verifying through touch alone that the miracle was real.

“My girl,” Lorenzo choked out, his voice cracking with a raw, shattered emotion that no enemy had ever heard. “My little girl.”

Sophia looked down at her father, then smiled a wide, radiant smile, her legs holding her weight with increasing stability. “Dad... I can feel the floor. I can feel the cold floor on my toes.”

Clara stood up slowly, stepping back into the shadows of the room, wiping the sweat from her forehead with the back of her wrist. The gamble had paid off. She had saved the child, and in doing so, she had secured the most dangerous protector in America.

Suddenly, the heavy oak door of the therapy wing exploded inward with a deafening crash.

Glass shattered as three tactical flashbang grenades rolled across the floor, hissing white smoke and blinding light.

“FBI! Federal law enforcement! Nobody move!” a voice roared through a bullhorn from the dark corridor outside.

Before Lorenzo could draw his weapon, heavily armed federal agents in black tactical gear swarmed the room, their assault rifles raised, lasers painting red dots across the walls.

Rico burst into the room, bleeding from a gash over his eye, shouting over the chaos. “Boss! The front gate! The Feds bypassed the main firewall—they had an inside man!”

Lorenzo slowly rose from his knees, keeping his body positioned protectively in front of Sophia, who cried out in terror and grabbed onto her father’s jacket. Lorenzo’s eyes flicked across the room, dark, cold, and calculating, before landing squarely on Clara.

The federal team leader stepped forward, lowering his rifle slightly as he pointed directly at Clara.

“Dr. Clara Halloway,” the agent shouted over the din. “You’re under arrest for conspiracy, industrial espionage, and aiding a high-value criminal syndicate. Step away from the child with your hands behind your head.”

Clara froze, the blood draining from her face. She looked at the federal agents, then looked back at Lorenzo Moretti.

Lorenzo looked at Clara standing in the center of the smoke-filled room, framed by the federal agents who had hunted her for months, and then looked down at his daughter standing firmly on her own two feet.

A slow, terrifying, wolfish smile spread across Lorenzo Moretti’s face. He reached inside his jacket, not for a gun, but for a gold-plated fountain pen.

“Agent,” Lorenzo said, his voice cutting through the chaos with absolute authority, freezing the entire tactical team in their tracks. “You can arrest my new head of security. But as for the woman who just performed a miracle in my house... you’ll have to go through me first.”
