Chapter 5 - The Queen’s GambitLucian raised the silver pistol, aiming it directly at his wife's chest. "Who are you, Elena?"

Elena didn't flinch. She took a slow, deliberate step into the room, her high heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. "I am the woman who saved your life tonight. Lower the gun, Lucian. You know you won't shoot me."

"Try me," Lucian growled, his finger tightening on the trigger. "You’re working with the Vance syndicate. You’ve been bleeding my accounts dry. You set up Marco. Was the dinner just a show to make Falcone lower his guard?"

"Marco is a snake who was selling your men to the Vances for six months!" Elena snapped, her composure cracking into raw passion. "Yes, I have offshore accounts! Yes, I gathered intelligence on your empire! But if I wanted you dead, Lucian, I would have let Falcone’s men execute you at 8:15 PM tonight!"

"Then explain the gun!" Lucian barked. "Explain the ledgers!"

Elena stopped three feet from the barrel of the gun. She reached into her coat pocket. Lucian instantly tensed, but she simply pulled out a small flash drive and tossed it onto the bed.

"My father didn't lose his money to bad investments, Lucian," Elena said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The Vance syndicate murdered my brother, tortured my father, and stole our family's assets. I married you because you were the only man with enough firepower to destroy them. But you were weak. You were stuck in a stupid, bloody turf war with Falcone over a few docks, completely blind to the fact that Viktor Vance was buying up your lieutenants one by one!"

Lucian’s eyes narrowed. "What?"

"Look at the drive," Elena commanded. "Marco wasn't working alone. Three of your captains—Santino, Bruno, and Mateo—have already taken Vance’s money. They were going to use the peace dinner to trigger a war between you and Falcone, let you wipe each other out, and hand the city over to Viktor Vance on a silver platter!"

Lucian felt the ground shift beneath his feet. He picked up the flash drive, his mind working at lightning speed. "You... you used the dinner to unite me and Falcone."

"I forced a peace treaty so you would have Falcone’s armies backing you when Vance strikes," Elena said, stepping closer until the warm curve of her body brushed against his arm, her eyes locking onto his. "I didn't steal your money to betray you, Lucian. I siphoned it into private military contracts. I built an army for us."

Lucian lowered the pistol slowly. He stared at his wife, awe and sheer disbelief warring in his chest. "You built an army?"

"Viktor Vance’s cargo ships land at the northern harbor at midnight tomorrow," Elena said, her lips curving into a deadly, gorgeous smile. "He thinks he’s coming to claim a city torn apart by mafia war. Instead, he’s walking into a trap."

She reached out, gently taking the silver pistol from Lucian’s hand and tucking it into her belt.

"The question is, Lucian... are you strong enough to stand beside me, or are you going to keep pretending I’m just your helpless, curvy housewife?"
