Chapter 8 - The Shadow EmperorThe gun battle ended in twenty minutes.

Viktor Vance’s elite mercenaries were decimated, trapped between the burning ship and the combined forces of the Moretti and Falcone families. Viktor himself was pinned to the concrete deck, bloody and battered, Lucian’s boot planted firmly on his chest.
Don Falcone walked over, breathing heavily, wiping blood from his cheek. He looked around at the burning pier, then at Lucian, and finally at Elena, who was calmly reloading her weapon near the sedan.
"It's over," Falcone declared, his voice filled with newfound respect. "Vance's network is broken. His assets in Europe are wide open. We can split his empire 50-50, Moretti."
Lucian looked down at Viktor Vance, who spat blood onto Lucian’s boot.
"You think... you win, Moretti?" Vance wheezed, laughing weakly through broken teeth. "You think... your wife is loyal to you? Ask her... ask her who paid for those offshore military contractors..."
Lucian froze. He slowly looked up at Elena.
Elena walked over, her face emotionless. She stood right beside Lucian, looking down at the dying syndicate boss.
"He's trying to sow seeds of doubt, Lucian," Elena said softly. "Ignore him."
"No... tell him, Elena..." Vance coughed, blood pouring from his lips. "Tell him about the Syndicate Council... Tell him who appointed your father... before he betrayed us..."
Falcone stepped back, his eyes narrowing as he gripped his pistol tight. "What is he talking about, girl?"
Elena didn't blink. She smoothly pulled the silver pistol from her waist, aimed it at Viktor Vance's forehead, and pulled the trigger.
BANG.
Vance went limp. Silence returned to the docks, save for the crackle of the burning ship.
Elena lowered the gun, staring at the corpse. "He was trying to survive by telling lies."
Lucian stared at his wife. The air between them grew dangerously cold. He remembered the ledgers in her trunk. The encrypted satellite phones. The military precision with which she had orchestrated an entire war in less than twenty-four hours.
"Elena," Lucian said, his voice dropping into a low register that made even Falcone’s guards uneasy. "Who paid for the private army?"
Elena turned to look at him. She didn't lie. She didn't run.
"I did," she said quietly. "With the money my father hid before his death. My father wasn't just a baker, Lucian. He was the founder of the High Council—the shadow organization that controls all five syndicates in this country."
Falcone gasped, taking two steps back, raising his gun toward Elena. "Carlo Carbone was the High Council Chairman?! That's a myth!"
Before Falcone could react, Lucian stepped directly in front of Elena, drawing his gun and aiming it at Falcone's head.
"Put the gun down, Falcone," Lucian warned, his voice deadly.

"She’s been playing us both, Moretti!" Falcone yelled. "If she’s Carbone’s heir, she holds the authority over all our territories!"
"And she is my wife," Lucian spat back. "Put the gun down, or you don't leave this harbor alive."
