CHAPTER 1 – THE GIRL WHO CHALLENGED THE DEVIL

In the eastern town of San Miguel, fear had a name.
Don Alejandro Garza.
People lowered their eyes whenever his convoy drove through the streets. Shop owners smiled even when they were terrified. Police officers looked the other way. Judges suddenly forgot evidence whenever Alejandro's name appeared in court.
He wasn't simply wealthy.
He owned ranches stretching beyond the horizon, luxury hotels, trucking companies, casinos, and men willing to kill without asking questions.
His greatest weakness, however, wasn't greed.
It was pride.
If something refused to obey him, he destroyed it.
That was why he bought the most expensive stallion in the country.
The horse arrived on a massive trailer escorted by armed guards. Pure black from head to hoof, nearly eighteen hands tall, muscles rippling beneath a coat that looked like polished obsidian.
Its name was El Diablo.
People whispered the horse had descended from champion bloodlines, but years of abuse had turned it into a living nightmare.
No rider lasted longer than twenty seconds.
Professional cowboys were thrown like dolls.
A champion rodeo champion suffered a shattered spine.
Another man lost an eye.
One ranch worker never woke from his injuries.
The horse wasn't evil.
It simply trusted no human anymore.
Alejandro hated that.
Every failed attempt felt like a personal insult.
One afternoon he stood before hundreds of townspeople inside the rodeo arena.
His expensive boots echoed against the wooden platform.
In one hand he held an envelope stuffed with cash.
"Fifty thousand dollars," he announced.
His voice rolled across the silent crowd.
"To anyone who can tame El Diablo before sunset."
The audience gasped.
Fifty thousand dollars.
Enough to buy a house.
Enough to change an entire family's future.
Yet no one moved.
Everyone remembered the broken bones.
Everyone remembered the blood.
Alejandro laughed.
"So this town is full of cowards."
Finally one man stepped forward.
Within seconds El Diablo launched him into the fence.
The next rider lasted fifteen seconds.
The third didn't even make it onto the saddle before the horse slammed him into the dirt.
Laughter mixed with screams.
Alejandro smiled.
Power wasn't about winning.
It was about making others fail.
Then, from the back of the crowd...
A quiet female voice interrupted.
"I'll do it."
The arena exploded with laughter.
People turned around.
Standing there was a young woman wearing faded jeans, worn boots, and a simple white shirt.
She couldn't have weighed more than one hundred pounds.
Her long dark hair was tied into a loose braid.
Her face looked gentle rather than fearless.
She didn't resemble a rider.
She looked like a schoolteacher.
Someone shouted,
"She's going to die."
Another laughed,
"Maybe the horse needs a snack."
Even Alejandro smirked.
"What is your name?"
"Elena Morales."
"And why would someone like you risk your life?"
For the first time, emotion flickered across her face.
"My father."
The crowd grew quiet.
"He needs heart surgery tomorrow morning."
"The hospital wants the money tonight."
"If I fail..."
She swallowed.
"He dies."
Silence spread through the arena.
Alejandro stared at her for several seconds before throwing the envelope onto a nearby table.
"Very well."
"You may try."
The heavy gate creaked open.
El Diablo emerged.
His ears flattened.
His nostrils flared.
Dust exploded beneath his hooves.
He charged directly toward Elena.
Women screamed.
Men stepped backward.
Several guards reached for their rifles.
But Elena...
Didn't move.
Not even one step.
Instead...
She slowly lowered her eyes.
Relaxed her shoulders.
And whispered something so softly that no one could hear.
Then...
The impossible happened.
The horse stopped less than a foot away.
The entire arena froze.
No one dared breathe.
Even Don Alejandro slowly stood from his chair.
Because for the first time...
El Diablo wasn't looking at someone with hatred.
He was looking at Elena...
May you like
As if he already knew her.
