Chapter 2 - Whispers in the East WingDown in the sterile, quiet sanctuary of the estate’s medical suite, Hannah woke to the steady, rhythmic beep of a heart monitor and the smell of antiseptic.

Her head throbbed near her left temple where Claire’s cold steel had sheared away her dark hair. She raised a shaking hand, her fingers brushing against the jagged, uneven stubble. The humiliation burned hot and sharp beneath her skin, but deeper than the shame was a cold, calculating resolve.

He gave me his jacket, she thought, staring up at the dark mahogany ceiling. Daniel Carver draped his own coat over a servant girl while forty of the city's elite watched him defy his own fiancée.

The door clicked open softly.

Ben crept in, holding a small paper cup filled with water and a straw. His big eyes were wide with worry.

"Are you dying, Hannah?" he whispered, climbing onto the edge of the crisp white hospital bed.

Hannah managed a weak, tender smile, pulling herself up against the pillows. She took the cup from his small hands and sipped. "No, sweetie. I'm just tired. Is everyone gone?"

"Mr. Carver threw them out," Ben said, his voice dropping to an awed conspiratorial tone. "He told Miss Claire her car was waiting at the front steps and that if she ever stepped foot inside the iron gates again, he’d feed her little Pomeranian to the harbor sharks. Well, he didn't say the shark part, but Mr. Hale looked like he was thinking it."

Hannah’s breath caught. He dismissed Claire? On the night of their engagement celebration?

"Where is Mr. Carver now?" she asked, her heart skipping a beat against her ribs.

"In his study. But before he went up, he left this for you." Ben reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy brass key attached to a luggage tag labeled Service Quarter 4B — Private Archive Access. "He said if you were well enough by dawn, you could finally stop pretending you didn't know where your brother’s files were hidden."

Hannah froze. The blood rushed in her ears.

He knows.

He had known from day one. Every late-night search through the service corridors, every stolen glance at the ledgers, every secret she thought she had guarded with her life—Daniel Carver had watched her like a hawk watching a mouse in an open field, and he hadn't crushed her.

Instead, he had just handed her the key to the truth.
