Chapter 8 - Ashes of the EmpireThree days later, the front pages of every New England newspaper carried the same headline: PROVIDENCE SHIPPING EMPIRE COLLAPSES IN MASSIVE RICO RAID; WHITLOCK AND THORne ARRESTED.

The Whitlock shipping dynasty was officially dead. Its assets were seized by federal authorities and absorbed entirely by Carver Logistics, making Daniel the undisputed king of the eastern seaboard.

Inside the master bedroom of the Carver mansion, a warm fire crackled in the marble hearth.

Hannah sat propped up against plush silk pillows, wearing a soft ivory cashmere robe. Her hair had been professionally styled by a private stylist who had magically transformed the jagged cut near her temple into a chic, asymmetrical pixie bob that accentuated her striking cheekbones and dark, luminous eyes.

The door opened, and Daniel walked in carrying a silver tray with a bowl of steaming broth and fresh fruit. He had changed out of his suits for the evening, wearing a simple dark gray crewneck sweater that made him look less like a ruthless mob boss and more like the man she had dreamed of finding in another lifetime.

He set the tray gently across her lap, then sat on the edge of the mattress, his dark eyes softening as he looked at her.

"How is our little girl doing today?" Daniel asked, his large palm coming to rest gently over the round curve of her belly.

Beneath his hand, a sharp, distinct kick answered him.

Daniel smiled—a rare, breathtaking smile that transformed his harsh features into something warm and fiercely tender. "Strong. Just like her mother."

Hannah covered his hand with her own, her heart swelling with a profound sense of safety and love she had never thought possible. "You didn't have to buy out the entire downtown salon just to fix my hair, you know."

"Claire cut it," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous growl. "Every time I look at it, I’m reminded of how close I came to losing you. That salon was a very small price to pay for perfection."

Hannah laughed softly, leaning her head against his broad shoulder. "What happens now, Daniel? Now that the debts are gone, the Whitlocks are in federal prison, and my brother is safe?"

Daniel wrapped his arms securely around her, burying his face in her dark hair, inhaling her scent like a man who had finally found home after a lifetime at sea.

"Now," Daniel whispered against her ear, "you stay right here. Where you belong. As my queen."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box, snapping it open to reveal a dazzling, flawless five-carat yellow diamond ring that caught the firelight like liquid gold.

"Hannah Brooks," Daniel murmured, looking deep into her eyes with absolute devotion. "Will you marry me, take my name, and rule this empire by my side?"

Tears of pure joy spilled over her lashes as she nodded, her lips curving into a radiant smile. "Yes, Daniel. Yes."

May you like

And as the cold autumn rain tapped gently against the windows of the Carver mansion, the dark shadows of the past finally dissolved into a future built on unbreakable loyalty, fierce protection, and an everlasting love.
