Chapter 3 - The Alliance of ShadowsBy 3:00 AM, the mansion was dead silent, save for the ticking of grandfather clocks and the steady drumming of the storm outside.

Hannah slipped out of the medical wing wearing her plain black dress, her movements swift and silent. Her bare feet made no sound against the Persian runners as she descended the spiral staircase leading deep into the subterranean foundation of the Carver estate—a place the staff called the Iron Vault.

The brass key slid smoothly into the lock of Door 4B.

The heavy iron door swung inward, revealing a climate-controlled archive room lined with steel filing cabinets. But standing by the central table, illuminated by a single overhead bulb, wasn't a pile of dust-covered documents.

It was Daniel.

He was leaning against the table, rolling a silver Zippo lighter between his fingers. The click-clack rhythm echoed in the small room. He didn't look up immediately as she stepped across the threshold, but the tension in the air spiked instantly.

"You shouldn't be out of bed, Mrs. Brooks," Daniel said, his voice low and rich in the confined space.

"Cut the act, Mr. Carver," Hannah said, her voice shaking only slightly as she closed the heavy door behind her. She stood tall, her chin raised despite the jagged hair on her temple. "You knew who I was before I ever stepped foot in your kitchen. Why am I here? Why haven't you thrown me in the bay like everyone else who crosses your family?"

Daniel finally looked up. His dark eyes burned with an intensity that made her breath hitch. He pushed a thick leather folder across the steel table toward her.

"Because your husband, Aaron, wasn't killed in an accident, Hannah," Daniel said bluntly. "He was murdered by Arthur Whitlock’s enforcers because he found out the Whitlock shipping empire was laundering cartel money through Carver Logistics to frame me for federal RICO violations."

Hannah stared at him, the room spinning around her. "You... you knew?"

"I've been building a RICO case against Arthur Whitlock for two years," Daniel said, walking slowly around the table until he stood mere inches from her. Up close, his presence was overwhelming—radiating power, danger, and a strange, unexpected current of protection. "Your brother, Caleb, stumbled onto the same ledger. Whitlock’s men didn't kill Caleb—they locked him in a black-site shipping container down at Pier 14 to use as leverage against me."

Hannah’s knees trembled. All the anger, the grief, and the suspicion she had harbored for months collided into a single shattering realization. "Caleb... my brother is alive?"

"As of twenty minutes ago, my men breached the container," Daniel said quietly. "He’s safe, resting in a secure safehouse across the state line."

Tears spilled over Hannah’s lashes, hot and fast. She dropped her hands to her swollen belly, her breath hitching in a sob she couldn't suppress. "Why are you telling me this? Why help me?"

Daniel reached out. For a second, she thought he would pull away, but his large, warm hand gently cupped the side of her face, his thumb brushing away a tear just above her jagged temple. His touch was shockingly tender for a man who ruled the criminal underworld of New England.

"Because, Hannah," Daniel murmured, his gaze dropping briefly to her lips before meeting her eyes with absolute fierce conviction, "Claire Whitlock humiliated the mother of my child in my own house tonight. And nobody insults what belongs to Daniel Carver and lives to brag about it."

Hannah’s breath caught in her throat. The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

The mother of my child.

"What... what did you say?" she whispered, the words trembling on her lips.

Daniel’s expression darkened with intense, possessive heat. "Did you really think I didn't recognize the night we spent together in Newport nine months ago, Hannah? Before Aaron took the job at the docks? Before you were forced into this house?"

May you like

Hannah staggered back a step, the past crashing over her like a tidal wave. Nine months ago—before Aaron’s tragic descent, before the crushing debt, before the nightmare began—there had been one night of reckless, consuming passion with a stranger whose face she had only seen in the dim moonlight of a coastal hotel room... a stranger with eyes exactly like the ones staring down at her right now.

"Aaron knew," Daniel said quietly, reading the absolute shock on her pale face. "He took you in anyway. He loved you enough to raise my child as his own to protect you from my world. And when Arthur Whitlock found out about the bloodline connecting us, they killed him to silence the secret."
