Chapter 5 - The War for the Soul of the City

The final confrontation took place at the gala for the city's elite. Dante walked in with Elena on his arm. She wore a dress of midnight blue, the collarbone mark covered by a diamond choker. To the public, she was his mysterious protégé. To the men in the shadows, she was a death sentence.
Marcus stood by the entrance, his hand on his sidearm. He saw them. His eyes widened. He signaled for the hit.
“Now,” Elena whispered.
She didn't run. She walked into the center of the ballroom.
As the first assassin moved, the lights went out. When they came back on, the screens in the ballroom were no longer displaying the gala festivities. They were displaying bank transfers, recordings of bribes, and photos of the conspiracy that had killed her family.

The city’s elite watched in horror as their own crimes were broadcasted to the world. The police didn't arrive for the hitmen; the federal agents arrived for the guests.
Dante stood by the wall, watching the chaos. He realized then that he wasn't the protagonist of this story. He was the support. The bodyguard. The one who provided the shield for the Queen to reclaim her throne.
