Chapter 3 - Blood Money and Broken Promises

The safehouse in the Heights was a concrete fortress disguised as a luxury suburban estate. Bulletproof glass, reinforced steel doors, and six heavily armed Malone soldiers patrolling the perimeter.

By 3:00 AM, Gracie was fast asleep in a plush, oversized bed, holding a brand-new teddy bear Connor's men had hastily acquired from a 24-hour superstore. But downstairs, in the sterile kitchen, Sarah sat wrapped in a blanket, staring into a cup of black coffee.

"He told me it was a game," Sarah whispered, her eyes hollow. "Before Thomas left that Tuesday, he gave Gracie a purple notebook. He told her it was a secret codebook for her future. He said, 'Gracie, if Daddy ever goes on a long trip, you keep track of everything your mommy buys. Every item, every penny. The numbers will tell you when it's safe.' I thought he was just being an eccentric, loving father. I didn't know he was giving her a target on her back."

Connor stood by the window, his eyes scanning the dark tree line outside. "The numbers aren't prices, Sarah. They're coordinates. Or account numbers. Thomas encrypted the entire Russian mafia infiltration data into a format only a child's grocery list could disguise."

"But they found us," Sarah sobbed. "How did they find us at that market? We've been living like ghosts!"

Connor didn't answer. A cold dread was beginning to settle in the pit of his stomach. To find Sarah in a random, run-down neighborhood corner market required more than just luck. It required local surveillance. It required access to Malone territory tracking.

There was a rat in his own house.

Before Connor could voice his suspicion, the perimeter lights outside suddenly went dark.

The backup generators failed to kick in. Total, pitch-black silence enveloped the estate.

"Connor?" Sarah’s voice gasped in the dark.

"Stay down!" Connor yelled, drawing his custom matte-black semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster.

A split second later, the front glass doors didn't just break—they exploded inward in a hail of flashbang grenades and heavy automatic gunfire. The deafening thud-thud-thud of silenced submachine guns ripped through the living room walls.

"Target the stairs! Secure the asset!" a voice shouted from the darkness.

Connor fired blindly into the muzzle flashes, hearing a satisfying grunt as one attacker dropped. He grabbed Sarah by the arm, dragging her behind a reinforced kitchen island just as a swarm of bullets shredded the mahogany cabinets above them.

"Gracie!" Sarah screamed, trying to break away. "They're going upstairs for Gracie!"

Connor’s heart stopped. He looked toward the darkened staircase just as a shadow leaped from the upper landing, carrying a small, thrashing bundle wrapped in a blanket.

"I got her! Fall back! Fall back!"

Connor charged out from behind the island, firing rapidly, but a smoke grenade detonated in the center of the foyer, blinding him and filling his lungs with acrid, burning chemicals. By the time he coughed his way through the front door, the screech of tires echoed down the driveway.
