Chapter 4 - The Accountant of Vengeance

The underground garage beneath the Neon Lounge was silent, save for the heavy, rhythmic sound of a leather strap hitting bare flesh.

A man was tied to a steel chair beneath a single, harsh halogen bulb. It was Tony "Two-Times," one of Connor’s senior perimeter guards from the safehouse. His face was a mask of blood and swelling, but Connor wasn't finished.

Connor stood before him, his shirt sleeves rolled up, his hands covered in leather tactical gloves. Marcus stood in the shadows, watching silently.

"I'm going to ask you one more time, Tony," Connor said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Who gave Volkov the security codes to the Heights safehouse? Who cut the main power grid?"

"I don't know, boss! I swear to God!" Tony screamed, spitting out a tooth. "They threatened my family! A guy approached me at the docks... he knew where my kids went to school! He said if I didn't cut the grid at 3:15, they'd send my kids home in boxes!"

"What was his name?" Connor leaned in close, his eyes reflecting the cold light.

"He didn't give a name! But... but he had a Malone ring on his finger, boss! It wasn't a Russian! The guy who set this up... he's one of us! He's inside this room right now!"

Connor froze.

Slowly, deliberately, Connor turned his head toward the shadows. Toward Marcus.

Marcus didn't flinch. Instead, a slow, sinister smile crept across his weathered face. He reached into his coat pocket, but he didn't pull a gun. He pulled a ringing cell phone and tossed it onto the concrete floor between them.

"It's for you, Connor," Marcus said smoothly, stepping back into the doorway where three heavily armed Malone soldiers—men Connor had known for a decade—suddenly stepped into the light, their weapons raised and aimed directly at Connor’s chest.

Connor looked at the phone on the floor. He picked it up.

"Malone," Volkov’s voice came through. "We have the purple notebook. But your friend Thomas was cleverer than we thought. The final cipher requires a key that isn't written down. It requires a spoken phrase that he only told one person. His brother. You."

Connor stared at Marcus. "You sold out Thomas. You sold out my brother."

"Thomas was going to ruin everything, Connor!" Marcus snapped, his voice filled with bitter resentment. "He wanted to take the Malone family legitimate! He wanted to turn us into a bunch of soft, tax-paying corporate rats! The Russians offered us a multi-billion-dollar global pipeline. All we had to do was eliminate the boy scout. But Thomas hid the access codes before he died. Now, you're going to give Volkov the key phrase, or the little girl dies. And then, I take the throne."

The Deepening Twist: The betrayal wasn't external. The man who had held Connor's coat at Thomas's funeral was the architect of his death—and now he held the life of a six-year-old girl in his hands.
