Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Ultimatum

The rendezvous point was a abandoned, rusted shipyard on the edge of the dark, churning harbor. Rain poured down in sheets, blurring the skeletal frames of half-destroyed cargo ships.

Connor stood alone in the center of an empty warehouse, illuminated by the headlights of four surrounding SUVs. He wore a heavy black trench coat, his hands buried deep in his pockets.

From the shadows, Volkov stepped forward, flanked by Marcus and a dozen heavily armed Russian mercenaries. In Volkov's left hand, he held a thin, silver chain. At the end of that chain, handcuffed by her tiny wrist to a rusted iron pillar, was Gracie.

She wasn't crying. Her red braids were damp, her face pale, but her sharp, intelligent eyes were locked onto Connor.

"Connor," she called out, her voice small but steady. "The bad man has fifty-two bullets in his vest. I counted them. And his car has a squeaky belt."

Volkov backhanded the air near her face to silence her, causing Connor to take a lethal step forward before a dozen red laser dots slammed into his chest.

"Silly little accountant," Volkov sneered. "Always counting. Now, Malone. The key phrase. Marcus tells me Thomas had a motto. A phrase he used when he locked down the family's deep-cover Swiss accounts. Give it to me, and the girl lives. Lie to me, and I paint this concrete with her brains."

Marcus stepped forward, a smug, victorious grin on his face. "Give it up, Connor. It's over. You lose the family, you lose the girl. Just give him the phrase and maybe I'll let you leave this city alive."

Connor looked at Gracie. Then he looked at Marcus. Finally, he looked at Volkov.

"You want the phrase that opens the Hail ledger?" Connor asked softly, his voice cutting through the roar of the rain outside.

"Speak it!" Volkov demanded, raising a gold-plated desert eagle pistol, aiming it directly at Gracie’s head.

Connor took a deep breath. "The phrase is... 'A Malone never forgets a rat.'"

Marcus’s smile instantly vanished. "What? That's not the—"

"Now, Gracie! Zero!" Connor shouted.

The moment the word 'Zero' left Connor’s mouth, Gracie didn't panic. She instantly dropped flat onto the concrete floor, pulling her tiny hands out of the oversized handcuffs—handcuffs she had spent the last two hours secretly lubricating with the leftover banana peel she had smuggled in her pocket.

Before Volkov could pull the trigger, the entire roof of the warehouse shattered.
