CHAPTER 1 ā THE DAY THE TOWN CAME TO WATCH HER DIE

No one in Dry Creek had ever seen so many people gathered at the old Hale Ranch.
By sunrise, pickup trucks stretched for nearly a mile along the dusty road. Men leaned against wooden fences with folded arms. Mothers clutched their children's shoulders, unsure whether they should leave or stay. Teenagers secretly livestreamed the event despite knowing Victor Marelli's men hated cameras.
Everyone had heard the rumor.
Victor wasn't holding a trial.
He was staging an execution.
At the center of the enormous arena stood Emily Carter.
Twenty years old.
Barely five feet six.
A simple cream-colored dress fluttered in the scorching wind.
No weapon.
No escape.
No chance.
Across the arena, hidden behind reinforced steel gates, echoed a sound that made everyone's blood run cold.
BANG!
The massive black bull slammed its horns against the metal.
Again.
And again.
Its furious breathing sounded almost human.
Dust exploded beneath its hooves while ropes hanging on the fences trembled with every impact.
Old ranchers quietly shook their heads.
"That isn't just any bull."
"That's Diablo..."
"The one Thomas Hale raised."
"The same bull that killed three men after Thomas died."
Nobody dared speak louder than a whisper.
Because Victor Marelli was watching.
The feared crime boss sat comfortably beneath a white canopy, dressed in a tailored black suit despite the unbearable heat.
A glowing cigar rested between his fingers.
Gold cufflinks reflected the sunlight.
He smiled as though today's event were nothing more than afternoon entertainment.
People feared Victor for good reason.
For fifteen years he had controlled nearly every ranch, transport company, and livestock auction across the county.
Sheriffs suddenly retired.
Witnesses disappeared.
Businesses that refused his "offers" mysteriously burned overnight.
Everyone suspected him.
No one could prove anything.
Emily had made one fatal mistake.
Three nights earlier she had hidden inside the abandoned feed barn while escaping one of Victor's drunken enforcers.
From behind rotten wooden walls she overheard a conversation.
A conversation never meant for living ears.
Victor admitted Thomas Hale had never died taming the bull.
He had been murdered.
The accident had been staged.
Diablo had been framed.
The ranch had been stolen.
Emily knew the truth.
Victor knew she knew.
That was enough.
He stood and raised one hand.
The crowd instantly became silent.
"If she survives," Victor announced with a smile, "she walks away free."
He paused.
"But no one helps her."
"If anyone steps inside this arena..."
His bodyguards slowly pulled back their jackets, revealing pistols.
"...they die first."
Nobody moved.
Not even the sheriff.
Especially not the sheriff.
The old lawman lowered his eyes.
Cowardice spread through the crowd like wildfire.
Then...
SCREEEEEECH!
The iron gates slowly opened.
The bull exploded forward like a freight train.
Its hooves shook the earth.
Children screamed.
Women covered their mouths.
Emily never ran.
She simply stood there.
Waiting.
Victor laughed.
"Finally..."
But just before Diablo reached her...
Emily quietly whispered only three words.
The bull froze.
Complete silence swallowed the arena.
Then something impossible happened.
The monster lowered its head...
...and gently rested it against her hand.
Victor's smile disappeared.
Because only one person in the entire world had ever used those exact words.
May you like
Thomas Hale.
And the dead don't teach secrets.
