CHAPTER 1 — THE CRY THAT SHOULDN'T HAVE EXISTED

The first person who heard the baby breathe...

...wasn't a doctor.

It wasn't a nurse.

It wasn't the father kneeling beside the delivery bed with blood on his hands and tears he refused to let anyone see.

It was the woman mopping the hallway.

The emergency room had already gone silent.

Machines no longer screamed.

Doctors exchanged the exhausted look that always meant one thing—they had done everything they could.

A tiny white blanket covered the infant's face.

"Time of death..."

The senior physician glanced at the wall clock.

"...2:17 A.M."

Across the room, Dominic Romano—the most feared crime boss on the East Coast—collapsed beside his wife's hospital bed.

His wife, Isabella, had died only forty-three minutes earlier during childbirth.

Now their only son had followed her.

For the first time in twenty years...

Dominic Romano looked helpless.

Outside the delivery room, every armed bodyguard lowered his head.

Nobody dared speak.

Nobody dared breathe.

Until a quiet voice interrupted.

"Please..."

Everyone turned.

A young cleaning woman stood in the doorway holding nothing but a yellow mop bucket.

Her faded uniform was too large.

Her sneakers were soaked from washing hospital floors.

Dark circles rested beneath her eyes as if sleep had abandoned her years ago.

"My name is Elena Brooks," she said carefully.

"I think your baby is still alive."

The room exploded.

"What?"

"Security!"

"Get her out!"

The chief surgeon frowned.

"This area is restricted."

But Elena didn't move.

She stared only at the baby's chest.

Again.

There.

Almost invisible.

A tiny movement.

Barely enough to wrinkle the blanket.

She whispered,

"He's trying to breathe."

Nobody believed her.

Except Dominic.

Something inside the broken father refused to let hope die.

He slowly stood.

His expensive suit was stained with his wife's blood.

His eyes were hollow.

"If she's wrong..."

he said quietly,

"...nothing changes."

Then he looked directly at the doctors.

"But if she's right..."

His voice became ice.

"...and you stop her..."

No one wanted to imagine the rest.

The room froze.

Elena walked forward.

Her hands trembled.

Not from fear.

From memories.

Years ago...

She had watched her own baby brother choke because an overcrowded emergency room made them wait twenty-seven minutes.

She had never forgotten the sound.

Never forgotten the color of his lips.

Never forgiven herself.

Now...

She refused to lose another child.

She gently uncovered the infant.

His skin looked pale.

His lips carried the faintest trace of blue.

She tilted his tiny head.

Pressed softly beneath his jaw.

Nothing.

She checked again.

Then she felt it.

A blockage.

Small.

Deep.

Hidden.

"Warm towel."

Nobody moved.

"I said NOW!"

A nurse instinctively obeyed.

Elena wrapped the baby carefully.

Two gentle taps.

A slight adjustment.

One careful sweep inside the mouth.

Nothing.

Again.

The room held its breath.

Then—

The tiniest cough.

One weak gasp.

Another.

The monitor suddenly flashed.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

The baby's chest rose.

His fingers curled.

And seconds later...

A loud newborn cry echoed through the delivery room.

Several nurses burst into tears.

One doctor stumbled backward into the wall.

Dominic Romano simply stood there...

Unable to move.

Unable to blink.

Unable to believe the impossible.

The child everyone had declared dead...

...was alive.

Elena slowly sat on the floor.

She clutched her own chest as sharp pain spread beneath her ribs.

Nobody noticed.

Everyone was staring at the miracle.

Everyone...

Except Dominic.

He noticed.

And for reasons he couldn't explain...

The young cleaner's face felt strangely familiar.

May you like

As though fate had finally returned someone his past had tried very hard to erase.
