CHAPTER 8 — THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE MERCY

That evening...
Samuel and Elena returned to the tiny apartment she rented above an old bakery.
There wasn't much.
A secondhand table.
Two mismatched chairs.
Books stacked beside the bed.
A single framed photograph of Martha—the homeless woman who had once saved Elena's life.
Samuel smiled sadly.
"You built a life."
Elena laughed softly.
"I survived."
Before either could say another word...
Someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Samuel immediately reached for the kitchen knife.
Elena opened the door.
Dominic Romano stood alone.
No bodyguards.
No weapons.
Only baby Gabriel asleep in his arms.
For several seconds...
Nobody spoke.
Finally Dominic stepped inside.
"I came to say thank you."
He carefully placed Gabriel into Elena's arms.
The tiny boy opened his eyes.
His little fingers wrapped around hers.
The room became completely silent.
Samuel watched his sister smile in a way he hadn't seen since they were children.
Dominic noticed it too.
"My wife always believed children could heal broken people," he said quietly.
"I didn't understand what she meant until now."
Samuel stepped forward.
"You carry the last name I hated my entire life."
Dominic nodded.
"I know."
"I was wrong."
"No."
Dominic looked him in the eye.
"Our fathers were wrong."
"They thought silence would protect us."
"It only protected the murderer."
Before anyone could answer...
Dominic's phone rang.
His expression darkened.
"What happened?"
The voice on the other end was shaking.
"Boss..."
"They found Victor."
"Where?"
"The old St. Catherine Orphanage."
Elena's face instantly turned white.
That orphanage.
Margaret.
Richard.
The place where her childhood had been stolen all over again.
Victor hadn't chosen the location by accident.
He wanted her there.
An hour later...
Police surrounded the abandoned building.
Rain poured from the black sky.
Floodlights illuminated broken windows.
Victor stood alone on the roof.
Waiting.
As Dominic, Elena, and Samuel approached together, Victor slowly applauded.
"Beautiful."
"The family is finally reunited."
His smile widened.
"Now..."
"Let's see which one of you is willing to die to keep the others alive."
He pressed a small remote in his hand.
A red light began flashing somewhere inside the orphanage.
Samuel looked toward the building.
His eyes widened.
"Explosives..."
Victor smiled.
"I told you."
"This was never about revenge."
"It was always about making survivors choose."
May you like
The countdown had already begun.
