Chapter 2 - WHISPERS IN THE MARBLE HALLS

“A doctor heals the sick. A mafia medic buries the evidence.”The second day at the estate was marked by a quiet, suffocating routine. Victoria Cavalari had been brought back to the estate’s private medical wing, bypass surgery and emergency toxicology treatments having stabilized her, but she remained weak.

Mia found herself drafted not as a guest, but as Victoria’s primary private nurse. It was Stefano’s way of keeping her close, useful, and under constant surveillance.

"You have gentle hands, child," Victoria whispered. The matriarch of the Cavalari family lay propped up on silk pillows, her face pale but her eyes still holding a sharp, calculating intelligence.

"I'm just doing my job, Mrs. Cavalari," Mia replied, checking the IV drip. "Your heart rate is stabilizing, but the thallium has left some residual neuropathy in your lower limbs. You need to rest."

"Call me Victoria. Only my enemies call me Mrs. Cavalari—it makes them feel polite before they try to kill me." Victoria let out a soft, dry laugh that turned into a cough. Mia instantly brought a cup of water to her lips, supporting her head.

As Victoria drank, she looked deeply into Mia’s eyes. "Stefano thinks he can control everything. He thinks he can build walls high enough to keep out the devil. But he doesn't realize the devil was invited to dinner years ago."

"What do you mean?" Mia asked, her clinical curiosity piqued.

Before Victoria could answer, the heavy double doors of the medical wing burst open. One of Stefano’s high-ranking lieutenants, a burly man named Enzo with a permanent scowl, rushed in. He was bleeding from a deep gash on his temple.

"Where is Stefano?" Enzo roared, clutching his side. "The South docks... they set fire to the warehouse. It was an ambush!"

Within seconds, Stefano was in the room, his presence immediately commanding the chaos. He took one look at Enzo and then looked at Mia.

"Treat him," Stefano ordered.

"I'm a student, Stefano! I don't have a license to perform surgery on gunshot wounds or..."

"He has a piece of shrapnel in his side," Stefano interrupted, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "If we take him to a public hospital, the police will arrest him, and the Marcones will finish the job. You saved my mother. Save my brother-in-arms."

Mia looked at Enzo, who was turning pale from blood loss, and then at the makeshift surgical tray Stefano’s men had brought in. The nurse in her—the part of her that had sworn to preserve life regardless of who held the body—took over.

"I need sterile water, lidocaine, a scalpel, and absolute silence," Mia commanded, her voice dropping all hesitation.

For the next forty-five minutes, Stefano watched her work. He watched the absolute precision of her hands, the lack of fear as she dug out a jagged piece of rusted metal from Enzo’s side, and the steady, neat sutures she threw to close the wound.

When she finished, her forehead was beaded with sweat. She stepped back, wiping her hands on a towel.

"He'll live," Mia said, looking directly at Stefano. "But your world is bleeding, Stefano. And sooner or later, you're going to run out of bandages."

Stefano walked over to her, his eyes burning with something she couldn't quite decipher.

"Then it’s a good thing I found a doctor who doesn't fear the sight of blood."
