Chapter 5 - THE MAFIA'S MERCY

“Sometimes the only way to save a life is to take another.”The fallout was immediate and bloody.

By 3:00 AM, the estate was under lockdown. The waiter had been interrogated in the wine cellars—a place Mia refused to go, though she could hear the distant, muffled screams through the floorboards of her room.

She sat on the edge of her bed, her green silk dress stained with wine, her knees pulled to her chest. She was trembling. The reality of the world she had stumbled into was crashing down on her.

The door opened, and Stefano walked in. He had changed into a clean shirt, but there was a faint smear of blood on his cheek.

Mia looked at him, horror rising in her throat. "Did you kill him?"

"He was a traitor, Mia," Stefano said, walking over to the sink to wash his face. "He was paid by my uncle Matteo and Emilio Marcone to finish what they started at the opera. If you hadn't knocked that glass over, I would be dead right now."

He turned to face her, the water dripping from his jaw.

"You saved my life tonight, Mia."

"I don't want to save lives just so you can take others!" Mia shouted, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes. "I’m a nurse! I’m supposed to heal people! I’m not a shield for a mafia boss!"

Stefano crossed the room in three strides. He grabbed her by the shoulders, pulling her up from the bed.

"Do you think I chose this?" he roared, his usual composure cracking to reveal the raw, bleeding fire underneath. "My father was murdered when I was eighteen. My brother was blown up in his own car. If I am not the monster in the dark, my family dies. My mother dies. You die."

His grip softened, his hands sliding down her arms to wrap around her wrists. He pulled her close, until their chests were pressed together, their breathing synchronized in the quiet room.

"When I saw my mother dying in that box, I thought my world was over," Stefano whispered, his amber eyes searching hers with a desperate intensity. "And then you appeared. Like an angel standing in the middle of a slaughterhouse. I can't let you go, Mia. Not because you know too much. But because you are the only clean thing left in my life."

Mia looked up at him, her heart aching with a complex, terrifying mixture of fear and desire. He was a monster, yes. But he was a monster who would burn the world to keep her safe.

Before she could speak, his lips met hers.

It was a bruising, desperate kiss, born of adrenaline, fear, and a hunger that had been building since they first locked eyes at the Golden Gate Opera House. Mia groaned, her hands finding their way into his thick, dark hair, pulling him closer. For a moment, the blood, the poison, and the threat of death faded into the background.

But the peace was short-lived.

A sudden, deafening explosion rocked the estate. The windows of the guest wing shattered inward, showering the room in a rain of glass.
