Chapter 4 - A DANCE WITH THE DEVIL IN RED

“In a room full of monsters, the prettiest dress is just a target.”The dress was emerald green silk, backless, and fit Mia like a second skin.

Stefano had spared no expense. He wanted her to look like a woman who belonged at his side—a woman who had transitioned from a broke nursing student to a mafia queen overnight. But as Mia looked at her reflection in the full-length mirror, all she saw was a lamb dressed up for the slaughter.

"You look beautiful," a voice said from the doorway.

It was Victoria. She was leaning on a silver-headed cane, wearing a stunning black gown that concealed the medical monitors strapped to her chest.

"I feel like a target," Mia admitted, smoothing down the silk.

"We are all targets, darling," Victoria said, walking over and placing a heavy gold necklace around Mia’s neck. The emeralds matched her dress perfectly. "But some of us choose to face the gun standing up. Stefano is a hard man, Mia. His father was a monster, and I had to raise Stefano to be stronger than the monsters. But he has a weakness."

"And what is that?"

"He actually believes he can keep the people he cares about safe," Victoria whispered, her eyes shining with a mixture of pride and profound sadness. "Do not let him down tonight."

The Grand Ballroom of the Cavalari estate was filled with the glitter of chandeliers and the soft hum of classical music. But beneath the elegance, the tension was palpable. Armed guards stood in every corner, their suits tailored to hide the submachine guns beneath them.

Stefano met Mia at the base of the grand staircase. He wore a flawless tuxedo, his hair slicked back. When he offered his arm, Mia took it, her fingers sinking into the expensive fabric of his sleeve.

"Smile, Mia," he murmured, his breath warm against her ear. "Everyone is watching. Especially my uncle."

At the head table sat Matteo Cavalari, an older man with a bulbous nose and greedy, wet eyes, and Emilio Marcone, the head of the rival family—a man whose face was scarred from a long-forgotten turf war.

"Stefano!" Matteo boomed, raising a glass of red wine. "And this must be the miraculous healer. The girl from the opera."

"Her name is Mia Sullivan," Stefano said, his voice dripping with ice. "My fiancée."

Emilio Marcone chuckled, a dry, rattling sound. "A nursing student from the slums, Stefano? I thought you had higher standards. But I suppose she has... other talents."

Stefano’s grip on Mia’s waist tightened, his knuckles turning white. Mia felt the sudden, dangerous shift in the air. The guards in the room subtly shifted their weight.

"My talents include recognizing the smell of rot, Mr. Marcone," Mia said, her voice clear and ringing across the table. She looked directly at Emilio, then at Matteo. "And right now, this table smells of it."

Matteo’s smile faltered. "A feisty one."

The dinner proceeded like a high-stakes chess match. Mia watched every movement. She watched Matteo’s hands. She watched the waiters.

And then, she saw it.

A waiter, his hands shaking slightly, placed a fresh glass of Pinot Noir in front of Stefano. The waiter wasn't one of the regular estate staff; Mia had memorized the faces of the staff over the last forty-eight hours. This man had a small, faded tattoo of a snake on his wrist—the symbol of the Marcone street enforcement.

As Stefano reached for the glass, Mia acted on pure instinct.

She "tripped" over her silk gown, her arm swinging wide. She knocked the glass of wine directly into Stefano’s lap.

"Oh my god, I’m so sorry!" she cried, grabbing a napkin and dabbing at his trousers.

The ballroom went dead silent.

Stefano didn't move. He looked down at the dark red stain on his pants, then up at the waiter, and finally at Mia.

"Enzo," Stefano said softly.

Before the waiter could run, Enzo and two other guards grabbed him, dragging him out of the ballroom through a side door.

Emilio Marcone stood up, his face pale. "This is an outrage! You violate the truce—"

"The truce was violated the moment you tried to poison my son in his own home," Victoria Cavalari’s voice cut through the room like a blade. She stood at the entrance of the ballroom, looking regal and terrifying.

Stefano stood up, pulling Mia close to his side.

"The dinner is over," Stefano announced, his voice echoing off the marble walls. "And the war has officially begun."
