CHAPTER 2 — “The Little Girl Recognized Something No Adult Saw”

Lily's tiny voice disappeared beneath the growing storm of accusations.

No one heard her.

No one except Maria.

The exhausted maid had rushed toward her daughter the moment the shouting began, afraid the little girl would be frightened by the chaos. She knelt beside Lily, wrapping one protective arm around her shoulders.

"It's okay, sweetheart," Maria whispered.

But Lily wasn't looking at the crying woman anymore.

She was staring at the silver bracelet wrapped around Cassandra's wrist.

A delicate bracelet.

Tiny sapphire flowers.

One missing stone near the clasp.

Lily pointed with her crayon.

"Mommy..."

Maria looked.

The color drained from her face.

The bracelet.

Impossible.

She knew every scratch on it.

Every tiny mark.

Because it had belonged to her own mother.

The last gift Maria's mother had given her before dying from breast cancer six years earlier.

Maria had searched for it for months after it mysteriously disappeared from her apartment.

The police had called it a simple theft.

Maria cried for days.

Not because it was expensive.

Because it was the last thing her mother had ever touched.

Now...

The woman accusing Daniel Carter of fathering her child...

Was wearing it.

Maria's heart nearly stopped.

At the center of the ballroom, Cassandra continued crying.

"I never wanted this," she sobbed.

"I begged Daniel to answer my messages."

"I begged him not to leave me alone."

Several guests exchanged sympathetic glances.

An older woman quietly wiped away tears.

People always believed tears.

Especially beautiful tears.

Daniel, however, never looked away from Cassandra's eyes.

"I've never met you."

"You've met me plenty of times."

"No."

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

"You are!"

The shouting echoed through the ballroom.

Flash.

Flash.

Flash.

Photographers captured every expression.

Every tear.

Every accusation.

Within minutes, those images would spread across the internet.

Across the room...

One man wasn't watching the confrontation.

He was watching the exits.

His name was Victor Sloan.

Forty-five.

Chief Financial Officer of Carter Dynamics.

He had worked beside Daniel for nearly twelve years.

To everyone else, Victor appeared calm.

Professional.

Concerned.

But hidden beneath the table...

His fingers were shaking.

Not from sympathy.

From fear.

He glanced toward Cassandra.

Very briefly.

Just long enough.

Cassandra caught his eye.

Almost invisibly...

Victor gave the slightest nod.

Then looked away.

No one noticed.

Except...

Lily.

Children often watched the people adults ignored.

She tugged Maria's sleeve.

"Mommy..."

Maria forced a smile.

"What is it, baby?"

"The crying lady knows the man with the shiny glasses."

Maria frowned.

"What?"

"They looked at each other."

Maria followed Lily's finger.

Victor Sloan.

He was already pretending to speak with another executive.

Maria frowned harder.

Maybe Lily imagined it.

She was only three.

Wasn't she?

Meanwhile...

Robert Whitmore folded his arms.

"Miss Vale."

Cassandra sniffled.

"Can you tell us when this relationship supposedly began?"

"About eight months ago."

Daniel answered before Robert could speak.

"Impossible."

Everyone turned toward him.

"For the past eight months," Daniel said calmly, "I've either been with Isabella, at work, or traveling with company executives."

Cassandra laughed bitterly.

"Business trips."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

She smiled through tears.

"You invited me on one."

Whispers erupted again.

Daniel frowned.

"Name the city."

Cassandra hesitated.

"...Chicago."

Daniel didn't blink.

"I haven't been to Chicago in almost three years."

The ballroom became noticeably quieter.

Cassandra corrected herself immediately.

"I meant Boston."

Daniel looked directly at Robert.

"My company tracks every executive flight."

"Every hotel."

"Every meeting."

"Every expense."

"I've never taken a private trip with this woman."

Cassandra's breathing became uneven.

She hadn't expected details.

Only emotions.

Near the back...

Maria couldn't stop staring at the bracelet.

Finally...

She made a decision.

She stood.

Her knees trembled.

Her coworkers grabbed her arm.

"Maria..."

"What are you doing?"

"You'll lose your job."

She gently pulled free.

"I already lost something much more important."

Before fear could stop her...

Maria walked into the center of the ballroom.

Five hundred wealthy guests turned toward the maid.

Most had never noticed her before.

Tonight...

Everyone did.

Security immediately moved.

Daniel raised his hand.

"Let her speak."

Maria swallowed.

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"Excuse me..."

Cassandra turned.

Annoyed.

"What?"

Maria pointed at the bracelet.

"Where did you get that?"

Cassandra instinctively covered her wrist.

"What?"

"The bracelet."

"What about it?"

Maria took another step.

"It belongs to me."

Silence.

Cassandra laughed.

"Don't be ridiculous."

"My mother gave me this."

Maria shook her head.

"No."

"My mother gave it to me."

"It was stolen from my apartment."

The guests looked from one woman to the other.

Robert narrowed his eyes.

"You can prove that?"

Maria nodded slowly.

"I have photographs."

"My mother wore it every Christmas."

"My daughter played with it."

"My insurance report includes its description."

For the first time...

Cassandra stopped crying.

Victor Sloan quietly reached for his phone beneath the table.

His thumb rapidly typed one message.

GET OUT. NOW.

He pressed send.

Across the ballroom...

Cassandra's phone vibrated inside her purse.

Lily heard it.

She looked toward Victor.

Then toward Cassandra.

Then back again.

The little girl's eyes widened.

"They have the same bird."

Maria looked down.

"What bird?"

Lily pointed.

"The phones."

Victor had a small silver phoenix sticker on the back of his phone.

As Cassandra hurriedly reached into her purse to silence the vibration...

An identical silver phoenix sticker flashed for only a second.

A matching set.

An odd coincidence.

Or something much worse.

Robert noticed it too.

"So..."

he said quietly.

"You and Mr. Sloan use the same custom phone emblem?"

Victor froze.

Cassandra's hand stopped moving.

For three unbearable seconds...

Nobody spoke.

Then Victor forced a smile.

"They're sold online."

Robert smiled back.

"Interesting."

"I designed that logo myself."

Victor's face lost all color.

"It has never been sold."

The ballroom exploded into shocked whispers.

Daniel slowly turned toward the man he had trusted for over a decade.

"Victor..."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Why does the woman accusing me..."

"...have your personal company symbol?"

Victor opened his mouth.

No words came out.

At that exact moment...

A waiter rushed into the ballroom, pale with panic.

"Mr. Carter!"

Everyone turned.

"The security office..."

"It's been broken into."

"What?"

"The surveillance server..."

"...someone just erased every camera recording from tonight."

Daniel didn't answer.

He simply looked at Victor.

Victor looked at Cassandra.

Cassandra looked toward the nearest exit.

And little Lily whispered the sentence that made Maria's blood run cold.

"Mommy..."

May you like

"The bad people are tryingto run."
