CHAPTER 3 — “The Billionaire Locked The Doors… Then The Truth Started Running”

The ballroom erupted.

"They're deleting the evidence!"

"Someone call the police!"

"Don't let anyone leave!"

Guests abandoned champagne glasses and crowded toward the marble entrance. Reporters began shouting into their phones, desperate to break the story before anyone else.

Within minutes, social media exploded.

BREAKING: Billionaire Groom Accused Of Secret Affair At Engagement Party.

Millions would soon see the accusation.

Almost none of them would hear the truth.

Not yet.

Daniel Carter slowly stepped toward the center of the ballroom.

His expression had changed.

He was no longer the smiling billionaire celebrating his future.

He looked like the man who had built a multi-billion-dollar empire by surviving people who smiled while planning to destroy him.

His voice was calm.

Cold.

"Lock every entrance."

The room froze.

Security hesitated only a second before responding.

"Yes, sir."

Heavy wooden doors slammed shut.

Electronic locks clicked.

No one was leaving.

Several guests gasped.

"You can't keep us here!"

Daniel looked at them.

"If someone just destroyed evidence inside my home while publicly accusing me of a crime, this is no longer an engagement party."

He paused.

"It's an active crime scene."

No one argued again.

Across the ballroom, Victor Sloan quietly wiped sweat from his forehead.

This wasn't how the plan was supposed to unfold.

Cassandra was supposed to make the accusation...

Daniel and Isabella were supposed to begin fighting...

The engagement would collapse...

The board of directors would panic...

Stock prices would crash Monday morning...

And Victor's group of investors would quietly buy millions of shares before the truth ever surfaced.

Simple.

Elegant.

Profitable.

Instead...

Everything was slipping apart.

Because of one maid.

And one little girl.

Cassandra suddenly burst into louder tears.

"This is insane!"

"I've done nothing wrong!"

"I just wanted my child to have a father!"

She looked around desperately, hoping someone would defend her.

A few guests still looked sympathetic.

Others had begun doubting.

The cracks were growing.

Robert Whitmore stepped closer.

"Then answer one question."

She sniffed.

"What?"

"What hospital confirmed your pregnancy?"

Cassandra blinked.

"I..."

"Which doctor?"

Silence.

"When was your last appointment?"

More silence.

"What is your due date?"

Nothing.

Cassandra looked trapped.

Finally she whispered...

"I don't remember."

The ballroom exploded with disbelief.

Several doctors attending the engagement exchanged confused glances.

One quietly shook his head.

"No pregnant woman forgets her due date."

Isabella had not spoken for nearly ten minutes.

Now she finally walked toward Cassandra.

Everyone held their breath.

Would she slap her?

Would she scream?

Instead...

She asked one simple question.

"If Daniel abandoned you..."

Cassandra nodded dramatically.

"He did."

"Then why did you come here wearing a bracelet stolen from a housekeeper?"

Cassandra's eyes widened.

"I..."

She looked unconsciously toward Victor.

Again.

Only for a second.

But this time...

Daniel saw it.

His heart sank.

Victor.

His closest executive.

His friend of twelve years.

The man who had attended every Christmas dinner.

Every company retreat.

Every charity event.

Daniel slowly turned.

"Look at me."

Victor didn't.

"Victor."

Still nothing.

Daniel's voice became harder.

"Look."

Victor finally raised his eyes.

Daniel saw something he had never seen before.

Fear.

Not concern.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Near the ballroom entrance, two police officers hurried inside.

Behind them came Detective Ryan Mercer.

Forty-nine.

Twenty-six years in homicide.

A man famous for noticing what everyone else ignored.

He surveyed the ballroom once.

Broken glass.

Crying woman.

Terrified executives.

Locked doors.

Then his eyes landed on Daniel.

"You the homeowner?"

"Yes."

"Good."

The detective removed his notebook.

"Nobody says another word."

The ballroom became silent.

"I've worked enough investigations to know something."

He slowly looked around the room.

"When innocent people panic..."

"They talk."

"When guilty people panic..."

"They watch each other."

Without realizing it...

Victor glanced toward Cassandra.

Cassandra immediately glanced back.

Detective Mercer smiled.

"Thank you."

Victor's stomach dropped.

Meanwhile...

Little Lily had wandered closer to the dessert table.

Not because she cared about the investigation.

Because she wanted another vanilla cupcake.

Children remained children.

Even during disasters.

As she reached for a napkin...

She noticed something shiny beneath the long white tablecloth.

A black leather bag.

Half hidden.

No one else had seen it.

Curious, Lily crouched down.

Inside the open zipper...

She saw wires.

A small battery.

Several blinking lights.

And a tiny camera lens.

She blinked.

It looked like one of the toy cameras Daniel had once shown her.

Except...

This one wasn't a toy.

Lily frowned.

"Pretty light..."

She reached toward it.

"NO!"

A terrified scream echoed across the ballroom.

Everyone spun around.

Victor Sloan was running.

Running straight toward Lily.

His face twisted with panic.

"Don't touch it!"

Daniel reacted instantly.

He lunged between Victor and the little girl.

Security tackled Victor to the floor before he could reach her.

The ballroom erupted into screams.

"What is it?"

"What's under the table?"

Detective Mercer rushed forward.

He carefully lifted the leather bag.

His expression instantly changed.

"No one move."

The detective slowly stood.

Holding the device in both hands.

"It isn't a camera."

A long pause.

"It's a wireless surveillance recorder."

The detective turned it over.

"It records conversations..."

"...and streams them live."

A horrifying realization spread across the room.

Someone hadn't simply planned to accuse Daniel.

Someone had planned to broadcast every second of the scandal to the world.

The accusation...

The crying...

The humiliation...

Everything.

Live.

Detective Mercer looked directly at Victor.

"You were never trying to prove the billionaire was guilty."

He held up the device.

"You were manufacturing the biggest public scandal of the year."

Victor said nothing.

His silence said enough.

Just as officers placed handcuffs on Victor...

One of the younger detectives answered his phone.

His expression changed instantly.

He hurried toward Mercer.

"Sir..."

Mercer frowned.

"What is it?"

"The forensic team just accessed part of the deleted security system."

"And?"

"They recovered twenty-three seconds before the cameras went offline."

Daniel stepped closer.

"What does it show?"

The detective swallowed.

"It shows..."

He hesitated.

"Someone entering the security room."

"Who?"

The detective looked directly at Daniel.

"It wasn't Victor."

"It was..."

He stopped.

The entire ballroom waited.

"It was someone wearing the uniform of your household staff."

Every employee in the ballroom turned pale.

Maria's tray slipped from her hands.

It crashed across the marble floor.

Detective Mercer slowly looked at her.

"Mrs. Alvarez..."

His voice became dangerously quiet.

"Were you anywhere near the security office tonight?"

Maria couldn't speak.

Because she knew one terrifying truth.

She hadn't gone there.

But someone dressed exactly like her...

May you like

Had.
