CHAPTER 4 — “The Maid Became The Prime Suspect… Until Her Little Girl Asked One Impossible Question”

Maria Alvarez felt five hundred pairs of eyes turn toward her at once.

The silence hurt more than any accusation.

A moment ago, she had been the maid who quietly polished silverware and served champagne.

Now...

She was the woman everyone suspected had destroyed the evidence.

A television reporter whispered into her microphone.

"The maid appears to have had access to every part of the estate..."

Another guest shook his head.

"I knew someone on the staff had to be involved."

People who had smiled politely at Maria only an hour earlier now stepped away from her as though guilt were contagious.

Maria's breathing became shallow.

"I didn't do it."

No one answered.

"I swear..."

"I didn't."

Detective Ryan Mercer raised one hand.

"No one leaves."

He turned toward Maria.

"Mrs. Alvarez, where were you between 7:45 and 8:05 tonight?"

Maria wiped tears from her face.

"I was in the west kitchen."

"Can anyone verify that?"

Three catering employees immediately stepped forward.

"I can," said the head chef.

"So can I," added a pastry assistant.

"She helped us prepare the dessert table," another waiter confirmed.

Mercer wrote everything down.

"What exact time?"

The chef checked his smartwatch.

"She was with us until almost eight."

Mercer's eyebrows narrowed.

The recovered security footage showed the fake maid entering the surveillance room at 7:57 PM.

That was impossible.

Maria couldn't be in two places at once.

Across the ballroom...

Victor Sloan remained in handcuffs.

For the first time that night...

He smiled.

Very slightly.

Mercer noticed.

"So you're smiling."

Victor shrugged.

"You've arrested the wrong people before, Detective."

Mercer walked closer.

"You seem confident."

"I just enjoy watching assumptions."

Mercer leaned down.

"People who smile in handcuffs usually know something."

Victor's smile grew wider.

"You'll find out."

Meanwhile...

Isabella walked over to Maria.

Without saying a word...

She placed one hand gently on the frightened maid's shoulder.

Gasps spread across the ballroom.

A Whitmore standing beside a housekeeper?

During a scandal?

Robert Whitmore quietly frowned.

"Isabella..."

She looked at her father.

"If Daniel trusted her..."

"I'll trust her until someone proves otherwise."

Maria burst into tears.

"No one's ever..."

She couldn't finish.

Isabella hugged her anyway.

Across the room...

Daniel watched silently.

He had chosen the right woman.

Again.

Twenty minutes later...

The estate's entire security staff assembled inside the ballroom.

Mercer questioned them one by one.

Nothing.

No one admitted seeing the fake maid.

No one recognized her.

Then...

A young security guard nervously raised his hand.

"Detective..."

Mercer looked up.

"What is it?"

"I remember something strange."

"Go on."

"There were actually..."

He hesitated.

"...two maids."

The room froze.

"What do you mean?"

The guard swallowed.

"I thought Maria had changed uniforms."

"I saw one maid walking toward the ballroom..."

"...and another walking toward the surveillance hallway."

"I figured I was mistaken."

Mercer immediately turned toward Maria.

"Did anyone else have access to your uniform?"

Maria thought hard.

Then suddenly...

Her eyes widened.

"This afternoon..."

"Someone spilled coffee on my cleaning cart."

"So?"

"I went to the laundry room for another apron."

"When I came back..."

"My uniform bag had been opened."

Mercer's expression hardened.

"So someone had enough time..."

"...to copy your clothing."

Forensic technicians soon returned carrying several sealed evidence bags.

"We've completed the first fingerprint sweep."

Mercer looked hopeful.

"Results?"

"Almost every print on the surveillance recorder belongs to Victor Sloan."

Victor remained silent.

"But..."

The technician continued.

"We found another unidentified fingerprint."

"Whose?"

"We don't know."

"But it definitely belongs to a woman."

Everyone instinctively looked at Cassandra.

The technician shook his head.

"Already checked."

"It's not hers."

A new mystery had just begun.

Suddenly...

One of Daniel's senior assistants rushed into the ballroom carrying a tablet.

"Mr. Carter!"

Daniel turned.

"What happened?"

"Your social media accounts..."

"What about them?"

"They're under attack."

The assistant looked horrified.

"Someone uploaded edited videos."

Daniel grabbed the tablet.

The video already had twelve million views.

It showed Cassandra crying.

Daniel looking shocked.

Isabella stepping away from him.

But everything afterward...

Had been removed.

The clip ended before anyone questioned Cassandra.

Before Maria recognized the bracelet.

Before Victor was exposed.

The internet believed the fake version.

Comments flooded the screen.

'Another billionaire exposed.'

'Money can't buy morality.'

'Cancel him.'

Daniel quietly handed the tablet back.

"They planned everything."

Mercer nodded.

"This wasn't an emotional outburst."

"It was an operation."

Near the dessert table...

Little Lily sat on a chair swinging her tiny legs.

She didn't understand headlines.

She didn't understand investigations.

She only knew adults kept forgetting important things.

She looked toward Detective Mercer.

"Mister Police?"

Mercer smiled kindly.

"Yes?"

She frowned.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

Lily pointed toward the enormous ballroom entrance.

"Why did the bad lady come in through the front door..."

"...if she was already inside?"

Every adult stopped moving.

Mercer slowly turned toward her.

"What do you mean, sweetheart?"

Lily answered with complete innocence.

"I saw her before the music started."

The detective crouched to her eye level.

"Where?"

"The upstairs hallway."

Maria blinked.

"Lily..."

The little girl nodded confidently.

"She wasn't wearing the shiny dress."

"She had black clothes."

"And a hat."

The ballroom fell into stunned silence.

Mercer's pulse quickened.

"Are you sure?"

Lily nodded.

"She smiled at another lady."

"What lady?"

"The one with the red hair."

Everyone looked around.

There were dozens of women.

But only one had bright red hair.

Daniel's longtime event planner.

Vanessa Brooks.

Vanessa suddenly froze.

Mercer noticed immediately.

"You seem nervous, Ms. Brooks."

"I'm not."

"You've worked for Mr. Carter for six years?"

"Yes."

"You had full access to the estate today?"

"Yes."

"You coordinated every vendor..."

"...every guest..."

"...every staff member..."

"...every security schedule."

Vanessa's face slowly lost color.

Mercer took one step forward.

"Tell me something."

His voice became almost gentle.

"Why would a three-year-old child recognize you..."

"...if you'd never met the woman accusing Daniel Carter?"

Vanessa's lips parted.

No answer came.

At that exact moment...

Her phone vibrated.

The screen lit up.

One incoming message.

Mercer saw only four words before Vanessa tried to hide it.

DON'T SAY ANYTHING.

He immediately grabbed the phone.

Vanessa screamed.

"No!"

Mercer looked at the sender's name.

His eyes widened.

Because the message had not come from Victor Sloan.

Victor was wearing handcuffs.

It came from someone else.

Someone whose name made Daniel Carter's blood run cold.

Sender: Richard Carter.

Daniel stared at the screen.

His voice barely escaped.

"My brother..."

"But Richard died..."

May you like

"...three years ago."
