CHAPTER 5 — “The Billionaire’s Dead Brother Sent A Text… Then A Three-Year-Old Revealed The One Secret Everyone Missed”

No one spoke.

Not even the reporters.

Not even the photographers.

The ballroom had become so silent that the faint hum of the crystal chandeliers seemed deafening.

Detective Ryan Mercer stared at the glowing phone screen.

Sender: Richard Carter.

Daniel felt his knees weaken.

"That's impossible."

His voice cracked for the first time that night.

"My brother died three years ago."

He remembered standing beside Richard's coffin.

He remembered placing a single white rose on the polished wood.

He remembered giving the eulogy.

He remembered signing the death certificate with trembling hands.

There had been no mystery.

No unanswered questions.

Richard Carter was dead.

So who had just sent that message?

Vanessa Brooks lunged for her phone.

Mercer pulled it away before she could touch it.

"Sit down."

"I want my lawyer."

"You'll get one."

"I've done nothing wrong."

Mercer calmly unlocked the phone.

The latest message remained on the screen.

DON'T SAY ANYTHING.

Below it...

The contact photo was completely black.

No profile picture.

No surname.

Just one name.

Richard.

Mercer immediately handed the device to a forensic technician.

"I want everything."

"Deleted messages."

"Cloud backups."

"Location history."

"Recover it all."

The technician nodded.

"Yes, Detective."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

For the first time...

She looked genuinely afraid.

Daniel couldn't stop staring.

Richard.

His older brother.

His best friend.

The man who had taught him how to ride a bicycle.

Who defended him from school bullies.

Who celebrated when Daniel launched his first startup.

Three years earlier...

Richard's car had plunged from a mountain road during a thunderstorm.

Police called it a tragic accident.

The brakes had supposedly failed.

The case had been closed within forty-eight hours.

Daniel had never questioned it.

Until now.

Across the ballroom...

Victor Sloan suddenly laughed.

A quiet laugh.

But loud enough for Daniel to hear.

Daniel slowly turned.

"What?"

Victor smiled.

"You always believed everything was exactly what it looked like."

Daniel walked toward him.

"No."

"I believed my brother."

Victor's smile faded.

"That was your first mistake."

Mercer stepped between them.

"No one says another word."

He looked directly at Victor.

"You know Richard Carter."

Victor shrugged.

"I knew a lot of people."

"You worked with him."

"Years ago."

"What happened to him?"

Victor looked away.

"I attended the funeral."

Mercer leaned closer.

"I didn't ask about the funeral."

"I asked what happened."

Victor remained silent.

At that exact moment...

One of the forensic analysts hurried into the ballroom carrying a laptop.

"Detective!"

Mercer turned.

"What have you got?"

"We recovered part of the deleted surveillance system."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Can you identify the fake maid?"

The analyst nodded.

"Not clearly."

Everyone leaned toward the screen.

The grainy footage showed someone wearing Maria's uniform pushing a cleaning cart through the service hallway.

The face remained hidden beneath a cap.

Then...

For less than one second...

The woman looked up.

The image froze.

Mercer narrowed his eyes.

"Zoom."

The analyst enlarged the frame.

Still blurry.

But one detail remained perfectly clear.

A small crescent-shaped scar beneath the left ear.

Daniel frowned.

"I've seen that scar before."

"So have I," Isabella whispered.

Everyone looked at her.

She slowly pointed toward Vanessa.

"When she pulls her hair back..."

"...she has the exact same scar."

Vanessa instinctively covered her neck.

Too late.

Mercer noticed.

"So."

He smiled.

"Now we're getting somewhere."

Vanessa suddenly stood.

"I want to leave."

"No."

"You have no evidence."

"Sit."

"I'm done answering questions."

She spun toward the ballroom doors.

Two officers immediately blocked her path.

The event planner's confidence finally cracked.

Her breathing became ragged.

Sweat rolled down her forehead.

Then...

She whispered something almost too quietly to hear.

"They promised..."

Mercer stepped closer.

"Who promised?"

She shook her head violently.

"I can't."

"Why?"

"They'll kill me."

The ballroom froze.

Mercer's voice softened.

"Who will?"

Vanessa looked around the room as though someone invisible might already be watching.

Then...

She whispered two words.

"The Foundation."

Confused whispers spread through the guests.

"What foundation?"

"I've never heard of it."

Daniel frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Vanessa looked directly at him.

"You think Carter Dynamics made you powerful."

A nervous laugh escaped her.

"You don't even know who built the ladder you climbed."

Daniel stared.

"What does that mean?"

Before Vanessa could answer—

A loud crash echoed outside.

BOOM!

Every chandelier trembled.

Guests screamed.

Security rushed toward the windows.

One guard shouted—

"Black SUV!"

Another yelled—

"They just rammed the front security gate!"

Mercer cursed under his breath.

"Everyone stay inside!"

Outside...

Three masked figures jumped from the vehicle.

Each wore black tactical clothing.

One carried a drone.

Another held a jammer.

The third moved with frightening precision.

They weren't robbers.

They weren't paparazzi.

They looked trained.

Professional.

Their objective wasn't money.

It was someone inside the ballroom.

Security cameras outside flickered.

Then died.

Again.

The mansion's lights blinked once.

Twice.

Emergency generators activated.

The ballroom was now running on backup power.

Mercer grabbed his radio.

"Lock every interior hallway!"

No response.

Only static.

The signal jammer was already working.

Inside the ballroom...

Panic spread like wildfire.

Guests rushed in every direction.

Some hid beneath tables.

Others cried.

Several tried calling 911.

No signal.

Daniel immediately stepped onto the stage.

"Everyone listen to me!"

His voice cut through the chaos.

"Stay away from the windows!"

Security formed a protective line.

Isabella hurried toward Lily and Maria.

She knelt beside the little girl.

"You stay with me, okay?"

Lily nodded.

She wasn't crying.

Instead...

She looked strangely confused.

She kept staring toward one of the ballroom balconies.

Mercer noticed.

"What is it, sweetheart?"

Lily pointed upward.

"The man."

Mercer's heartbeat quickened.

"What man?"

"The man watching us."

Everyone instinctively looked toward the second-floor balcony.

For one brief second...

A tall figure in a dark suit stood perfectly still in the shadows.

His face hidden.

Only his profile visible.

Then...

He slowly stepped backward into darkness.

Gone.

Daniel's blood turned to ice.

Because despite the distance...

Despite the shadows...

He recognized one unmistakable habit.

The man always tilted his head slightly before walking away.

Exactly the way Richard Carter always had.

Daniel whispered, almost unable to breathe—

"No..."

"It can't be..."

Lily tugged on his sleeve.

"Mr. Daniel?"

He looked down.

The little girl smiled innocently.

"That's the man who gave the crying lady the bracelet."

Every adult in the ballroom froze.

Because if Lily was telling the truth...

Then someone who looked exactly like Richard Carter...

Had been inside the mansion...

May you like

Before Cassandra ever walked through the front doors.
