Chapter 2 - The Red Folder

The Presidential Suite was a palace compared to the damp, windowless basement room Alejandro had occupied for two years. Yet, she couldn't sit down. She paced the plush velvet rugs, her mind racing faster than the city traffic below.
She opened her worn canvas bag and pulled out the thick, red leather folder. She had found it three months ago while cleaning Julian’s private vault—a vault Victoria had carelessly left open during one of her pill-induced rages.
Inside were medical records, offshore bank accounts, and a birth certificate.
Alejandro wasn't just a random girl hired from an agency. Her employment had been meticulously engineered. The birth certificate inside the folder belonged to a child born twenty-five years ago—a child named Elena Sterling.
Julian’s sister.
The sister who had allegedly died in a tragic drowning accident when she was five years old. But the medical records in the folder showed a completely different story. Elena hadn't drowned. She had been kidnapped, her identity erased, and her inheritance absorbed by Julian and his father.
And the photos attached to the back of the file? They were photos of Alejandro as a teenager.
Alejandro stared at her own reflection in the suite's gold-rimmed mirror. The facial structure, the dark, piercing eyes—she wasn't a maid. She was the rightful heir to the entire Sterling empire. Victoria and Julian hadn't kept her in the kitchen because she was cheap labor. They had kept her there to keep her hidden in plain sight, controlling the one person who could strip them of their billions.
Suddenly, the suite door clicked open.
Alejandro slammed the folder shut, shoving it under a couch cushion just as Julian walked in. He looked exhausted, his tie loosened, his eyes bloodshot.
"Alejandro," he said, breathing a sigh of relief. "Thank God you're safe. The lawyers are drawing up a restraining order against Victoria. I've initiated divorce proceedings. She’s moving out of the mansion tonight."
"Thank you, Mr. Sterling," Alejandro said, her voice tight, her heart pounding against her ribs. She had to play the part. He couldn't know that she knew.
Julian stepped closer, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. "Don't call me Mr. Sterling anymore. You're free now, Alejandro. In fact... I want to offer you a position at the firm. An executive assistant role. I want to make up for everything my wife did to you."
He smiled, a warm, paternal, comforting smile. But now, all Alejandro could see was the face of a man who had stolen her entire life.

"I would be honored," Alejandro lied, forcing a grateful smile.
💥 CHILLING HOOK FOR THE NEXT CHAP: As Julian turned to pour two glasses of champagne to celebrate her "freedom," his phone buzzed on the coffee table. A text message flashed on the screen from an unknown number: “She knows who she is, Julian. Kill her before she destroys us all.”
