Chapter 6 - THE CONTENTS OF THE WATCH

Ten minutes later, Adriano, Rebecca, and a sleeping Clementine were inside the small, damp service room at the rear of the estate.

Adriano looked around the cramped space with visible disgust and pain. The room was barely larger than a closet, featuring a single twin mattress on the floor, a rusted radiator, and a small wooden chair.

“You slept here?” Adriano asked, his voice tight with restrained anger. “In my house... while Genevieve slept in a master suite with heated floors?”

“It had a door that locked,” Rebecca said simply. “That was all that mattered to me.”

She knelt by a tiny, hand-painted wooden toy box in the corner. She lifted out a few worn plastic dolls and brought out a thick, leather-bound photo album—Clementine’s baby book.

With trembling hands, Rebecca opened the back cover and pulled out an old, scuffed silver pocket watch. The glass face was cracked.

Adriano took the watch carefully, as if it were made of delicate porcelain. He pulled a small pocketknife from his pants and pried open the back casing.

Inside, tucked neatly beneath the mechanical gears, was not a piece of paper, but a tiny, micro-sized SD storage card.

Adriano looked at it in awe. “Thomas didn't just save my life,” Adriano whispered. “He took the evidence that Julian Moretti had used to try to murder me. He knew if he gave it to the police, the corrupt cops on Moretti's payroll would destroy it. He kept it safe... for you.”

Adriano walked over to a laptop sitting on a nearby desk and inserted the micro-card into a reader.

Files flooded the screen.

Dashcam video footage from Thomas’s tow truck captured the entire night of the incident: Julian Moretti’s dark SUV laying down the spike strip, the crash of Adriano’s car, Thomas heroically pulling Adriano out, and Julian firing the fatal shot that struck Thomas in the chest.

The video was clear as day. Julian’s face was fully visible under the streetlights.

Rebecca stared at the monitor, tears streaming down her face as she saw her husband’s final moments. He died a hero, defending a total stranger.

“He didn't die in an accident,” Rebecca wept, hiding her face in her hands. “He was murdered...”

Adriano stood behind her, placing a respectful, firm hand on her shoulder.

“He was a hero,” Adriano said softly, his voice trembling with emotion. “And tonight, his heroics end the tyranny of the Moretti family forever.”
