Chapter 3 - The Metamorphosis and the Midnight Threat

Hook: The maid became a queen in twenty-four hours, but a ghost from the past was waiting in the shadows to strip her naked.

The transformation of Anna was nothing short of a miracle. Within weeks, the simple maid uniform was replaced by bespoke silk gowns, tailored pantsuits, and minimalist gold jewelry. Daniel hired the best stylists in New York, but to his surprise, Anna didn't need to be taught how to walk or talk. Her time spent around Isabelle’s aristocratic family had left her with an innate, quiet elegance that outshone every model Daniel had ever met.

At the annual Whitmore Charity Gala, Anna stole the show. Clad in a midnight-blue backless gown, her hair swept up in an elegant chignon, she navigated the sea of billionaires with effortless grace. Sophie sat happily at a table nearby, glowing with a joy no one had seen in years.

Daniel watched Anna charm a notoriously difficult foreign investor. For the first time in his life, his heart fluttered for reasons unrelated to a business deal. She was breathtaking.

"You look beautiful," Daniel murmured, stepping up behind her and placing a hand on her waist for the cameras.

Anna stiffened slightly at his touch, a blush creeping up her neck. "Thank you, Mr. Whitmore. I'm just playing my part."

"Daniel," he corrected softly. "When we're in public, it's Daniel."

Their eyes locked, and for a fleeting second, the contract between them vanished. There was a genuine, electric spark—an undeniable pull between two broken souls healing a little girl together.

But the illusion was shattered an hour later.

Anna excused herself to go to the restroom. As she walked down the dimly lit corridor of the luxury hotel, a hand suddenly shot out from a alcove, gripping her arm tightly and pulling her into a service pantry.

Anna choked back a scream.

"Well, well, well. Look at the little mouse playing princess," a cruel, familiar voice mocked.

Anna’s blood ran cold. It was Julian Vance, Daniel’s chief business rival and a man known for his ruthless, underhanded tactics. But worse than that—Julian was Isabelle’s estranged cousin, the man who had tried to legally seize Isabelle’s dowry when she died.

"Julian," Anna whispered, her voice trembling. "Let go of me."

"I know who you are, Anna," Julian hissed, flashing a smartphone screen in front of her face. Playback audio began to fill the small room—it was the recording of her and Daniel from the study, discussing the fake contract and the ten-million-dollar payout.

"You thought you could fool the world?" Julian laughed maliciously. "This recording will destroy the Whitmore stock by tomorrow morning. Fraud, manipulation, exploiting a child’s grief... the press will eat Daniel alive. And you? You'll go to prison for extortion."

Anna felt the walls closing in. "What do you want?"

Julian smiled, a predatory gleam in his eyes. "Simple. Next week, Daniel is bidding on the tech monopoly acquisition in Berlin. I want his encrypted bidding files. Give them to me, or I release this audio and ensure you and that little brat Sophie never see Daniel again."
