Chapter 4 - A Treacherous Choice

Hook: To save the man she was secretly falling in love with, she had to become the very villain he thought she was.
For three days, Anna lived in a waking nightmare. Every time she looked at Sophie, who was now laughing, painting, and finally living like a normal child, her heart broke. Every time Daniel looked at her with growing warmth—bringing her coffee in the morning, asking about her day, looking at her with eyes that no longer saw a maid or a contract, but a woman—she felt like a monster.
She was trapped. If she didn't give Julian the files, the audio would leak, Daniel’s reputation would be ruined, and Sophie would be taken away by child services due to the ensuing scandal of "emotional fraud." If she did give him the files, Daniel would lose his empire.
On the night before the Berlin bid, Daniel entered Anna’s room. He looked tired but deeply content.
"I wanted to give you this," he said, handing her a small velvet box. Inside was a stunning, flawless diamond ring. "The press is starting to ask questions about our future. I want to make it official. Not just for the contract, Anna... but because I want it to be real."
Anna stared at the ring, tears stinging her eyes. He loves me, she realized with a wave of agonizing joy and terror. And I love him.
"Daniel, I..." She choked up. "I can't accept this. Not yet."
Daniel’s face fell slightly, but he smiled understandingly. "I understand. We have time." He kissed her forehead gently—a sweet, lingering touch that burned her soul—and left the room.
At midnight, Anna made her choice.
Sneaking into Daniel’s study, her hands shaking, she opened his secure laptop. She knew his password—it was Sophie’s birthday. With a heavy heart, she downloaded the encrypted Berlin bidding files onto a flash drive.
An hour later, she met Julian in the rainy, dark gardens of the estate.
"Here," Anna said, tossing the flash drive at him. "Delete the audio. Delete it now."
Julian caught the drive, plugging it into a tablet to verify the files. A sinister grin spread across his face. "Perfect. Absolute perfection. Daniel is ruined."
"The audio, Julian!" Anna demanded.
Julian laughed, tossing a burner phone at her feet. "The master file is on there. Have a nice life, little maid." He turned and vanished into the night.

Anna collapsed to her knees on the wet grass, sobbing into her hands. She had saved Daniel’s family, but she had destroyed his life’s work. She knew she couldn't stay. She couldn't look him in the eye after betraying him.
She packed her old maid’s uniform into a small duffel bag, left the diamond ring on the vanity, and walked out into the pouring rain, leaving the Whitmore mansion behind forever.
