Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs

The ballroom froze in absolute, suffocating terror.
Rocco hit the marble floor with a sickening thud, his eyes rolling back in sheer exhaustion and panic. The blood on his jacket was fresh, a stark contrast to the pristine white marble and the glittering jewels of the guests.
Viktor Vance took a half-step back, his hand instinctively dropping toward the concealed holster beneath his tailored tuxedo jacket.
"This is a farce," Viktor spat, his voice cracking slightly under the pressure of a hundred staring eyes. "You staged this—you dragged some pathetic street thug in here to frame me!"
Carmine didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply signaled with two fingers, and Gideon stepped out from the crowd carrying a heavy leather briefcase.
Gideon popped the latches, pulled out a stack of encrypted flash drives and physical bank statements, and tossed them carelessly onto the floor at Viktor’s feet.
"Offshore accounts originating from Cyprus," Gideon announced clearly, his voice carrying across the silent hall. "Routed through shell companies owned by the Ivanov syndicate. Total payout: fifty thousand dollars. Purpose: espionage and infiltration of the DeLuca estate using internal assets."
Gideon looked up, fixing his cold gaze on Viktor. "Mr. Vance, your signature is on the wire transfer authorization form. We pulled the metadata from your private terminal three hours ago."
The silence in the room was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Capos who had been loyal to Viktor started subtly stepping away from him, creating a wide circle of isolation around the rival underboss. In the underworld, betrayal was common, but getting caught red-handed with your fingerprints on a failed inside job was a death sentence.
Viktor’s face twisted into a mask of pure venom. He abandoned all pretense of diplomacy, ripping his hand out from his jacket with a sleek, custom-engraved Glock 19 pointing straight at Carmine’s chest.
"If I'm going down, you're coming with me, DeLuca!" Viktor roared.
Before his finger could even begin to squeeze the trigger, the entire ballroom erupted into motion.
Click. Click. Click.
From the balconies, behind the pillars, and flanking the exits, twenty red laser dots snapped onto Viktor’s forehead, chest, and throat. Carmine’s snipers had been locked onto him the entire evening.
Yet, Carmine didn't even blink. He didn't move an inch.
Instead, a blur of emerald silk swept past his shoulder.
Ivy didn't run. She didn't scream. Months of hiding, months of enduring humiliation, fear, and debt had burned away into cold, unyielding iron. She stepped directly into Viktor’s line of fire, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the most feared mafia boss in the city.
Viktor blinked, startled by her sudden movement. "Get out of the way, bitch! I'll blow your head off first!"
Ivy looked down the barrel of the gun, her pulse ice-cold, and tilted her head.
"You missed a spot, Viktor," she said softly.
Viktor furrowed his brow, confused. "What?"
"You forgot," Ivy continued, her voice echoing clearly across the hall, "that the night maid cleans up everything."
With blinding, cat-like speed, Ivy kicked out with her stiletto heel, smashing it directly into the side of Viktor’s knee joint with a sickening crunch.
Viktor shrieked in agony, his leg buckling beneath him as he dropped hard to the marble floor. The gun clattered out of his limp hand, skittering across the floor until it stopped right at Carmine’s polished leather shoe.
Carmine looked down at the gun, then slowly raised his gaze to meet Ivy’s. For a split second, something dangerously close to fierce, burning respect flared in the mafia boss’s dark eyes.

Carmine crouched down, picked up the pistol, and placed the cold steel barrel directly against Viktor Vance’s trembling forehead.
"The meeting is adjourned, Viktor," Carmine whispered.
