Chapter 7 - The Federal Ghost

The digital clock in the master study glowed 3:14 AM. Exactly one week since the night the deadbolt clicked shut in the basement kitchen.

Ivy sat at Carmine’s custom multi-monitor workstation, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed. Lines of encrypted code, IP addresses, and financial routing numbers scrolled across the screens in cascading green text.

Standing behind her, arms crossed over his chest, Carmine watched in absolute silence. He hadn't left the room in six hours.

"Found it," Ivy whispered.

A single dossier popped up on the central monitor. A photograph, a resume, and a secure bank routing record.

Carmine leaned in, his shoulder brushing against hers. "Who is it?"

"Not a federal prosecutor," Ivy said, clicking open a encrypted audio file. "Assistant United States Attorney Arthur Vance. Viktor’s older brother."

The name hung in the air like poison.

"Arthur used his position in the DOJ to shield the Ivanov syndicate from federal RICO charges in exchange for a thirty-percent cut of their drug trafficking profits," Ivy continued, pulling up a digital ledger. "And worse... look at the timestamp on the warrant he issued for this estate. It was filed four hours before the Ivanov assets were liquidated."

Carmine’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure obsidian. "He didn't just want to investigate us. He was planning a federal raid to seize our assets and hand them over to Viktor on a silver platter. And when Viktor died, Arthur inherited the vendetta."

"Worse than that," Ivy clicked another window open, revealing a live satellite feed and traffic camera footage of a black suburban convoy speeding down the interstate toward the DeLuca estate lines. "He didn't wait for a judge to sign the warrant. He’s leading an unauthorized tactical FBI raid right now. They're ten minutes away."

The estate’s red alarm klaxons suddenly blared to life throughout the mansion, their pulsing strobe lights casting crimson shadows across the mahogany walls.

Warning. Perimeter breach. Sector Four. Multiple tactical units approaching.

Gideon’s voice barked through the intercom system. "Boss! We've got federal units breaching the main gates! They bypassed the security grid—they have override codes!"

Carmine didn't panic. He didn't flinch. A terrifying, ice-cold calm washed over him. He reached into his desk drawer, pulled out a heavy Beretta 92FS, and slammed a fresh magazine into the grip with a sharp clack.

He looked down at Ivy, expecting her to run to the panic room.

Instead, Ivy stood up from the chair. She reached into her blazer pocket and pulled out a small, sleek flash drive she had just burned.

"They want the estate's financial records?" Ivy asked, a cold, sharp smile playing on her lips.

"They think they do," Carmine replied, racking the slide of his pistol.

"Good," Ivy said, plugging the flash drive into the secure terminal and setting a timed thermonuclear data-wipe script. "Let's give them what they want—and a little parting gift."
