CHAPTER 2 — THE LIES HIDDEN INSIDE MY OWN HOME

Nobody spoke.

The music from the ballroom continued as though nothing had happened.

Guests laughed.

Glasses clinked.

While only a few feet away, my son hadn't eaten real meat in weeks.

I picked up the broken bracelet box from the floor.

Then I looked directly at my mother.

"Explain."

She forced a nervous smile.

"You're misunderstanding everything."

"Sarah preferred staying back here because she wanted privacy."

Privacy?

I slowly turned toward the filthy mattress lying on the concrete floor.

The mold climbing the walls.

The leaking ceiling.

The empty food containers.

Privacy wasn't the word.

Abandonment was.

Sarah finally looked at me.

Tears streamed down her face.

"I tried calling you..."

"I wrote letters..."

"I even asked neighbors to contact you."

"I never knew why you stopped answering."

Stopped answering?

My blood turned cold.

"I answered every message."

"I sent money every month."

Sarah stared at me in disbelief.

"What money?"

Silence swallowed the room.

Jamie quietly reached into an old backpack.

He handed me dozens of unopened birthday cards.

Every single one was addressed to me.

Every single one had been returned.

Then Sarah opened a rusted metal box hidden beneath the bed.

Inside were bank statements.

Eviction notices.

Medical bills.

Letters from collection agencies.

She hadn't received thousands of dollars every month.

She had received almost nothing.

Meanwhile...

I walked into the mansion.

Marble floors.

Imported furniture.

Italian chandeliers.

Brand-new luxury appliances.

Everything I had paid for.

Everything bought with money stolen from my wife and son.

The guests became silent as I entered the ballroom.

My mother rushed behind me.

"Don't embarrass the family."

I turned around slowly.

"The family?"

I climbed onto the grand staircase overlooking everyone.

More than sixty wealthy guests looked up.

I grabbed the microphone from the live band.

"My name is Daniel."

"This house belongs to me."

"And every dollar used to build it was stolen from my wife and child."

The room froze.

Then an elderly man near the front raised his hand.

He introduced himself as the family's accountant.

His face had turned pale.

"I... I warned your mother years ago."

"I kept copies."

"What copies?"

He reached inside his briefcase.

Wire transfers.

Forged signatures.

False bank accounts.

Five years...

Nearly one hundred thousand dollars...

Gone.

My mother collapsed into a chair.

Prudence screamed for security.

But the guards didn't move.

Instead...

They stepped beside me.

Because the ownership papers for the mansion...

May you like

Were still in my name.
