CHAPTER 3 — JUSTICE DOESN'T FORGET

The courtroom was packed.

News reporters lined every hallway.

The story had spread overnight.

"The Son Who Came Home."

"The Mansion Built on Betrayal."

My mother arrived wearing expensive jewelry.

Prudence wore designer sunglasses as though appearances could still save them.

Neither looked at Sarah.

Neither looked at Jamie.

When the judge entered, the evidence unfolded piece by piece.

Every wire transfer.

Every forged withdrawal.

Every fake signature.

Every lie.

Then came the final witness.

The accountant.

He revealed something nobody expected.

Years earlier, I had secretly placed every overseas payment into a monitored trust account before my mother accessed it.

Every transaction had been recorded automatically.

There was nowhere left to hide.

The judge ordered every stolen asset frozen immediately.

The mansion.

Luxury cars.

Jewelry.

Investment accounts.

Everything.

My mother burst into tears.

"It was only temporary!"

"I meant to pay them back!"

Jamie looked at her quietly.

Then asked the question nobody else could.

"If you loved Daddy..."

"...why didn't you let Mommy feed me?"

No lawyer could answer that.

No excuse could erase five years of hunger.

Weeks later, Sarah and Jamie finally moved into the home that had always belonged to them.

The dirty service kitchen behind the mansion was demolished forever.

Not because we wanted to erase the past...

But because no child should ever grow up believing he belongs behind someone else's house.

As for my mother and Prudence...

They lost far more than money.

They lost the only thing that can never be rebuilt.

Trust.

And I learned something that no amount of hard work overseas could ever teach me.

The people who share your blood are not always your family.

The people who stand beside you when life is hardest...

May you like

Always are.

THE END.
