Chapter 2 - The Suitcase and the SecretThe massive iron gates of the Okafor estate swung shut behind me with a heavy, final clank.

The Lagos night air was thick and humid, filled with the distant hum of Victoria Island traffic and the beating of my own heart. I stood on the pavement with a single leather suitcase resting beside my feet, clutching my worn denim jacket around my shoulders.

Behind those iron gates, Chief Mrs. Beatrice Okafor was probably pouring herself a glass of vintage champagne, celebrating her clean victory. Vanessa Eze was likely leaning against Kelechi’s arm, whispering poison into his ear to ensure I was erased from his memory before midnight.

And Kelechi... the fierce, ruthless CEO who commanded multi-billion-dollar conglomerates with a single glare—he had let me walk out. He had looked into my eyes as the guards surrounded me and chosen the comfortable lie of his mother’s accusation over the quiet truth of my character.

A sharp, painful sting bloomed in my chest. I had actually thought he was different. I had thought beneath his icy boardroom armor beat the heart of a man capable of justice.

Instead, he was just another wealthy aristocrat who believed maids were disposable tools to be discarded when inconvenient.

I picked up my suitcase, hailed a passing yellow taxi, and gave the driver the address of my aunt’s modest apartment in Yaba.

As the car wove through the brightly lit streets of Lagos, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and looked at the screen.

Ten missed calls from Kelechi.

A bitter smile touched my lips. I switched the phone off, dropped it to the bottom of my suitcase, and turned my face toward the window.
