Chapter 5 - THE BREACH"Damn it!" Lorenzo sprang to his feet, pivoting back to the console.
On screen four, the heavy iron security gates we had seen earlier were retracting into the ceiling. But they weren't opening from the inside—someone was manually overriding the system from the courtyard security booth.
"She’s not running," Lorenzo realized with a jolt of horror. "She’s bringing someone in."
"Who?" I asked, gripping Leo tightly.
"Victor Vance." Lorenzo’s face drained of color. "The head of the Chicago enforcement wing. If he's here, Elena didn't just plan an internal coup—she sold out the entire family territory to the Chicago syndicate."
Suddenly, the main door to the master suite outside the panic room echoed with a dull, heavy thud.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
They were using a breaching charge.
"We can't stay here," Lorenzo said decisively, pulling a heavy tactical shotgun from a magnetic rack inside the panic room and slamming a shell into the chamber. He handed me a compact, lightweight 9mm pistol from the locker. "Can you handle this?"
I stared at the small firearm. A few weeks ago, I was a quiet retail worker dreaming of a nursery. Now, standing in a mafia lord's hidden bunker, I looked down at the gun, then up at Lorenzo.
"My ex-boyfriend taught me how to shoot before he turned violent," I said, my voice hardening with a sudden, cold surge of survival instinct. "Point and click."
"Good girl," Lorenzo murmured, his eyes locking onto mine with fierce approval. "Stay behind me. If the door goes down, you head straight through the hidden tunnel behind the bookshelf. It leads to the stables. A car is waiting there with a driver loyal to me."
"And you?"
"I'm going to clean house," Lorenzo replied coldly.

The master suite door exploded inward, showering the bedroom with splinters and smoke. Heavy footsteps echoed across the hardwood floor.
"Lorenzo!" a booming, arrogant voice called out through the wreckage. "It's over, brother! Come out with your hands up, and maybe we'll let the maid keep her breath!"
