Chapter 8 - THE FALL AND THE RISEWith a sudden burst of adrenaline, I didn't pull away—instead, I threw my entire body weight backward, slamming my heel directly down onto Elena’s instep with my heavy work boot.

"Ahhh!" Elena shrieked, her balance breaking. The surprise impact caused her hand to jerk upward, the silencer slipping from my neck.

"Now!" I screamed.

Lorenzo didn't wait. Even on one knee, he lunged forward with explosive speed, tackling Victor Vance around the waist and driving him hard into the stone wall of the balcony. Victor’s gun fired wildly into the night sky before slipping from his fingers and clattering over the ledge into the abyss below.

Elena stumbled backward, losing her footing on the wet marble threshold. Her eyes widened in sheer terror as she grabbed at empty air.

"Lorenzo! Help me!" she screamed, her fingers clawing at the edge of the balcony.

Lorenzo, having subdued Victor with a brutal right hook that knocked the Chicago boss unconscious, stood up slowly. He walked over to the edge of the balcony and looked down at Elena, whose fingers were slipping one by one from the rain-slicked stone.

"You killed my brother," Lorenzo said quietly, his voice devoid of any emotion. "You tried to kill my son. And you brought vaders into my home."

"Lorenzo, please! For Julian's sake—"

"Julian will be raised by my loyal blood, far away from your poison," Lorenzo replied coldly.

With a final, desperate gasp, Elena’s fingers lost their grip. She fell backward into the dark, stormy night, her scream fading rapidly as she plummeted toward the courtyard far below.

Silence descended on the balcony, save for the thrum of the private helicopter hovering just feet away, its pilot staring in absolute horror at what had just transpired.

Lorenzo turned around, his chest heaving, his face splattered with soot and blood. He walked toward me, his heavy boots crunching on the glass.

I stood there trembling, holding Leo tightly against my chest. The baby had stopped crying, lulled by the steady rhythm of my heartbeat.

Lorenzo stopped inches from us. He reached out with a large, calloused hand, gently touching Leo’s tiny cheek before his fingers brushed against my tear-stained face.

"Are you alright?" his voice was rough, almost fragile.

I nodded, swallowing hard. "We're... we're safe."

Lorenzo looked out at the burning horizon of the estate, then back down at me. The ruthless mafia boss was gone. In his place stood a man who had stared into hell and found his salvation.

"Not just safe," Lorenzo whispered softly, pulling us both gently into his embrace, careful not to crush the baby between us. "Home."
