Chapter 9 - ASHES AND NEW ROOTSThree weeks after the night the nursery doors were locked, the Rossi estate looked entirely different.

The bullet holes in the master suite had been repaired, the shattered glass replaced with crystal-clear panes, and the dark, oppressive atmosphere of a fortress built on paranoia had been lifted. The corrupt guards and Chicago mercenaries were gone, replaced by loyal men handpicked by Lorenzo who treated the estate not as a prison, but as a sanctuary.

In the sunlit nursery, Leo sat propped up in his crib, cooing happily as he reached out to grab a colorful mobile spinning overhead. He was growing stronger every day, his skin flushed with healthy color, his weight climbing steadily thanks to the unique bond we now shared.

And I was no longer a terrified maid hiding in the shadows.

"You know, you don't have to wash those windows yourself," a deep, familiar voice rumbled from the doorway.

I turned around to see Lorenzo leaning against the doorframe. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking less like a feared crime syndicate kingpin and more like a man who finally had something worth protecting.

"I like keeping busy," I smiled softly, setting down the cloth. "Idle hands and all that."

Lorenzo walked into the room, his footsteps silent on the plush rug. He stopped beside Leo’s crib, watching the baby kick his legs with delight. Lorenzo reached down, letting Leo wrap his tiny, strong fingers around his index finger. A genuine, soft smile broke across Lorenzo’s face—a smile few people in Tennessee had ever been privileged to see.

"Julian is settling in well at his boarding school in Switzerland," Lorenzo said quietly, looking up at me. "My lawyers finalized the asset restructuring this morning. Elena’s faction is completely dismantled. No one will ever threaten this house again."

"And the staff?" I asked.

"The old night nurse is doing five years in a federal penitentiary," Lorenzo said flatly. "As for you... the maid uniform is officially retired."

I blinked, surprised. "Retired? What am I supposed to do now? Just leave?"

Lorenzo stepped closer, closing the distance between us until I could feel the warmth radiating from him. His dark eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that made my breath catch.

"Leave?" He raised an eyebrow. "Who said anything about leaving? You saved my son's life. You brought light back into this tomb of a house. And..." He paused, his voice softening. "You brought a warmth into my life I didn't know I was missing."

My heart fluttered nervously. "Lorenzo..."

"Stay," he said, taking my hand in his large, steady palm. "Not as a maid. Stay as my partner. Stay as Leo's mother. Help me raise him. Help me build something real out of the ashes."

Tears welled in my eyes, but this time, they weren't tears of grief or fear. They were tears of profound, unbelievable peace.

I looked down at Leo, then back up at the terrifying, beautiful man who had promised to protect us with his life.

"I'd like that," I whispered.
