Chapter 1 - The French Lullaby and the Silent WiretapHook“When a billionaire opens his doors to an abandoned orphan, he expects to save a life. He never expects to hear a dead heiress’s voice singing from his guest bedroom—or to find a tracking device stitched into a child's worn-out teddy bear.”

"Fais dodo, Colas mon p’tit freˋre..."
I stood frozen outside the guest room door, the dark mahogany cold under my palm. A child from a state-run facility, documented as a feral runaway found at a roadside gas station, was singing a flawless, high-born Parisian lullaby.
I gently pushed the door open. Lily was sitting on the edge of the plush velvet bed, hugging her scuffed canvas backpack to her chest. In the dim amber glow of the city skyline, her blue eyes didn't look like those of a scared seven-year-old; they looked like the eyes of someone who had seen a ghost and lived to tell about it.
"Who taught you that song, Lily?" I asked, keeping my voice down to a calm, steady rhythm.
She froze. Her small hands clamped shut over the flap of her backpack. "My mama. Before the dark men came."
"The police said you had no family on record," I said, stepping into the room and sitting on the ottoman near her bed. "They said you were found alone on Highway 95."
"The police lied," she whispered, her voice trembling with a terrifying certainty. "Or the police were paid."
A cold spike of adrenaline shot through my chest. As the founder of Mitchell Investments, I spent my life reading between the lines of financial fraud, but this was human dark matter.
"Lily, what's in the bag?"
Slowly, with trembling fingers, she unzipped the bottom compartment of her worn canvas backpack. She didn't pull out a toy or a blanket. She pulled out a small, heavily scuffed silver locket and a stuffed brown bear whose right arm had been crudely sewn back together with thick black thread.
"My mama told me never to lose the bear," Lily said quietly. "She said if I gave it to the wrong person, we would both go to sleep forever."
I reached out my hand. "May I?"
She hesitated, then placed the plush bear in my hands. It felt unnaturally heavy toward the center. I ran my thumb over the coarse stitching along the spine. My instinct, honed by years of cutthroat corporate espionage, screamed at me. I stood up, walked to my study, grabbed a small seam ripper from my desk drawer, and sliced through the thick black thread.
Inside the synthetic cotton stuffing was a hard, matte-black metallic cylinder no larger than a thumb drive.
It wasn't a toy. It was a military-grade, encrypted audio recorder attached to a micro-GPS transmitter.
And the LED indicator light was blinking red.
Someone was listening to us right now.
Before I could process the blood-chilling realization, my private phone buzzed on the desk. An unknown caller ID from an encrypted satellite line flashed across the screen.
I answered, keeping my breath steady. "Mitchell."
A heavy, distorted voice resonated through the speaker. "You're a smart man, Robert. You made $250 million today on the Sterling acquisition. Don't throw your life and your empire away for a child who doesn't exist. Put her back on the street by morning, or we won't just liquidate your assets—we will liquidate you."
May you like
The line went dead.
I looked at the blinking red light on the desk, then back toward the hallway where Lily stood in her oversized sweater, watching me. The game wasn't just starting. I was already in the crosshairs.
