Chapter 7 - The UnravelingHook“When the king falls, the empire crumbles in minutes. But the most dangerous moment is always right before the final arrest.”

Chaos erupted inside Pier 42.
Federal agents poured into the warehouse, weapons drawn. Realizing his life was over, Julian reached into his coat, pulled out a compact pistol, and grabbed Lily, pulling her off the chair and holding her in front of him as a human shield.
"Back off!" Julian screamed, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "Back off or I end her right now!"
"Julian, stop!" James yelled, throwing his hands in the air as agents tackled him to the concrete floor. "It's over!"
"It's not over!" Julian shrieked, backing toward the edge of the pier where the dark water of the East River churned fifty feet below. "I built this empire! I am not dying in a prison cell!"
Lily writhed in his grip, biting down hard on Julian's wrist.
"Arrgh!" Julian roared, loosening his grip for a fraction of a second.
I didn't think. I didn't calculate risks, balance sheets, or probabilities.
I sprinted across the concrete, threw my body forward, and slammed into Julian with the full weight of my momentum. We hit the edge of the guardrail. I grabbed Lily by her collar with my left arm and yanked her violently toward the safe concrete floor just as Julian’s body tipped backward over the rusted barrier.
With a heavy splash, Julian Vance-Moreau vanished into the freezing, violent waters of the East River.
I crashed onto the floor, clutching Lily to my chest. She was sobbing uncontrollably, her tiny fingers digging into the fabric of my wet jacket.
"I've got you," I gasped, holding her head down against my shoulder. "I've got you, Lily. You're safe."
"Rob!"
I looked up. Marcus was running into the warehouse, surrounded by medical personnel and federal agents. Beside him walked a frail woman wrapped in a heavy thermal blanket, her eyes searching the room frantically.
"Mama?" Lily whispered, lifting her head.
Henriette stopped dead in her tracks. The blanket slipped from her shoulders.
"Lily!"
The reunion was a blur of tears, sobs, and words three years in the making. I stepped back, leaning against a steel pillar, watching mother and daughter hold each other as if the rest of the world had ceased to exist.
Marcus walked up beside me, handing me a dry towel.
"Julian’s body was recovered by the Coast Guard ten minutes downstream," Marcus said quietly. "No pulse. The Vance-Moreau empire is officially dead, Boss."

I watched Henriette brush the hair from Lily's face. The nightmare was finally over.
Or so I thought.
