Chapter 2 - The Command Sandbox

The secure briefing room in Fort Meade was chilled to sixty-four degrees, smelling of fresh coffee, ozone, and high-end electronics. On the wall-mounted tactical displays, live feeds pulsed with data streams from across three continents. As a newly minted Colonel taking command of the 704th Military Intelligence Brigade, my word was law within these walls.

My executive officer, Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Vance—no relation, thankfully—stood at attention beside the primary console.

“Welcome to the hot seat, Colonel,” Marcus said, sliding a thick tablet across the mahogany table. “Your predecessor left the digital perimeter locked down, but we found an anomaly running diagnostics this morning. An unauthorized persistent backdoor bridged into our contractor payment portal from a civilian IP address in Northern Virginia.”

I sat down, pulling off my cap to reveal my closely shaved scalp. The physical sting of Linda’s clippers had faded, replaced by the electric hum of pure adrenaline. “Trace it,” I commanded.

“Already did, ma’am,” Marcus replied, tapping the screen to bring up a geolocated map. “The ping originated from a suburban residence on Maplewood Drive. Registered owner... Ryan Vance.”

A dark, humorless chuckle escaped my lips. My husband—or rather, my soon-to-be-ex-husband—hadn't just been living off my salary; he had been siphoning defense contractor kickbacks through a shell company right out of our home office to fund his truck payments and his mother’s lavish lifestyle. He thought I was just a stressed-out wife. He had no idea he was playing poker against the house, and the house held all the encryption keys.

“Pull every transaction log from the past thirty-six months,” I ordered, my eyes locked on the tactical display. “Every wire transfer, every IP log, every communication packet routed through that router. I want a complete forensic audit on my desk by noon.”

“Yes, ma’am. But Colonel... that’s domestic jurisdiction. Do we loop in federal investigators?”

“We don't need to loop them in, Marcus. We are the federal investigation. Ryan used a Department of Defense sub-net protocol to bypass commercial banking firewalls. That turns a civilian fraud case into a federal security breach under the Espionage Act framework.” I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the table. “He wanted to dismantle my life? Let’s see how well his fragile little world holds up against a military tribunal and an asset seizure.”

My phone buzzed in my pocket. A barrage of texts from an unknown number. I pulled it out and tapped open the preview.

Ryan: Elizabeth, please pick up! The bank froze all our accounts! Mom is crying, the sheriff is towing my truck, and they won't let me leave the house! What did you do?!

Ryan: Answer me! You can't do this to your own family! Call off the cops or I swear I’ll ruin you in court!

I silenced the phone, tossed it onto the desk screen-down, and looked back at my XO.

“Status on the asset freeze?” I asked.

“Complete, Colonel. All joint accounts, personal savings, credit lines, and retirement funds linked to Ryan’s Social Security number have been quarantined pending an internal security review. As far as the financial world is concerned, he is completely broke.”

“Good,” I said, standing up and smoothing down the front of my dress uniform. “Now let’s go pay a visit to the civilian authorities handling his local charges. It’s time to show these amateurs how a real intelligence unit operates.”
