Chapter 8 - Epilogue – The New Command

The lights of the Pentagon command center glowed against the evening sky as I stepped out of my staff car, my service cap adjusted precisely, the single gleaming star of a Brigadier General sparkling on my shoulder epaulets.
As I walked through the security checkpoints, junior officers and battle-tested veterans snapped crisp salutes, their eyes filled with respect. I returned every salute with a sharp, confident nod.
I walked into my new office—a sprawling suite overlooking the manicured lawns of the courtyard, lined with secure terminals, tactical maps, and the quiet hum of a nation’s most sensitive intelligence networks.
On my desk sat a single framed photograph. It wasn't my wedding picture with Ryan—that had been burned to ash long ago.
It was a picture of me standing proudly in my dress uniform on the day of my promotion, completely bald, smiling with absolute, unyielding triumph.
Beside it lay a small, polished pair of electric clippers—bronzed, mounted on a wooden plaque, and engraved with a single sentence: “What doesn't destroy you makes you a General.”
