Chapter 7 - The Phoenix Rises

Six months later, the sun rose over the Chesapeake Bay, casting a golden glow across the deck of my new home—a quiet, modern waterfront property where the only sound was the gentle lapping of waves against the dock.

My phone chimed on the patio table. I picked it up, sipping my morning coffee. It was an official notification from the Department of the Army: my promotion packet for Brigadier General had cleared the Senate Armed Services Committee unanimously.

My hair had started growing back in a soft, even velvet stubble months ago, but I hadn't bothered to let it grow long. I liked it short. I liked it fierce. It was a daily reminder of the night my old life died and my true power was unleashed.

A car pulled up into the driveway. Marcus stepped out, holding a thick leather briefcase, walking up the front steps with a crisp salute.

“Good morning, General,” Marcus said with a grin.

“General?” I raised an eyebrow, stepping down to meet him. “The confirmation ceremony isn't until Friday, Marcus.”

“Word travels fast down secure channels, ma’am,” he replied, handing over the briefcase. “Besides, the Pentagon already updated your digital profile. You’re officially commanding the entire Cyber Intelligence Directorate for the Eastern Seaboard.”

“Excellent,” I said, unlocking the briefcase to review the morning intelligence briefing. “What’s the status of the Apex Systems asset liquidation?”

“Complete. Every offshore account has been drained, returned to the Treasury, and a portion redirected directly to your veterans' advocacy foundation.” Marcus chuckled softly. “As for Ryan and Linda? Ryan was just transferred to a medium-security federal correctional facility in upstate New York. And Linda... well, she’s currently living in a studio apartment funded by her part-time job at a local laundromat. Her friends completely blacklisted her.”

I looked out across the shimmering bay, feeling an absolute, untethered sense of peace. They had tried to cage me, to shave away my identity, to reduce me to a silenced shadow in my own home. Instead, they had forged me into something unbreakable.

“Let them rot,” I said softly.

“Yes, ma’am,” Marcus replied. “Car’s waiting whenever you’re ready to take your command.”
