Chapter 5 - THE UNEXPECTED ALLYI didn't take Chloe back to our home in Greenwich. I didn't take her to a hotel where Marcus’s wealth and political connections could track us down within the hour.

I drove my scooter with Chloe tucked safely in front of me to a small, run-down diner on the outskirts of Stamford—a place far removed from the pristine manicured lawns of Greenwich elite society.
I sat her in a back booth, wrapped her in a dry sweater, and bought her a warm plate of pancakes and hot chocolate. For thirty minutes, I watched her eat like a child who hadn't seen a proper meal in days. Her right cheek was flushed red where Victoria had struck her.
I pulled out my phone and placed it on the table.
The anonymous number that had called me the day before flashed on my screen again.
This time, I answered immediately.
"I have Chloe," I said, my voice dead serious. "And I have the black notebook."
A heavy sigh came over the line. "Good. You’re smarter than Marcus gave you credit for. Look toward the kitchen entrance."
I turned my head. Walking out from behind the diner’s kitchen doors was a woman in her early fifties wearing a plain wool coat and glasses. It was Mrs. Eleanor Vance—the actual, legitimate mother of Victoria Vance, and the former legal counsel for my late father's estate.
She walked over to our booth and sat down opposite us.
"Who are you really?" I demanded, keeping my arm around Chloe.
"I am the woman whose life your husband and my daughter destroyed," Eleanor said, her voice filled with a deep, haunting sorrow. "Victoria isn't working alone, Elena. She and Marcus have been plotting this for over three years. My daughter is a sociopath who stripped me of my legal practice, stole my firm's assets, and aligned herself with Marcus to seize your family's $100 million real estate trust."
I stared at her, stunned. "$100 million? My father was a high school teacher..."
Eleanor gave a bitter smile. "Your father was an early investor in commercial logistics real estate along the Eastern seaboard. He kept his wealth hidden to protect you from fortune hunters. When he died eight years ago, he left the entire estate in an irrevocable trust that would vest on Chloe’s ninth birthday—under one strict condition."
She leaned forward, her eyes locked onto mine. "The trustee must be a legally recognized, morally sound maternal figure. If Marcus could prove you were mentally unfit, incompetent, or absent, and successfully replace you with Victoria as Chloe's legal guardian before tomorrow night, the entire $100 million trust would fall under their joint control."
Everything suddenly aligned into a terrifying, crystal-clear picture.
The continuous psychological degradation. The isolation in the house. The deliberate prohibition from Chloe's school. The fake narrative that I was a embarrassment, a simpleton, a maid.
It was never about my background. It was a calculated, multi-year campaign of gaslighting designed to manufacture evidence of my "incapacity" so they could legally steal my father's legacy and take my child.
"They are going to file emergency mental health commitment papers against you tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM," Eleanor warned. "Dr. Sterling has bribed a probate judge in Fairfield. Once those papers are signed, law enforcement will come to your home, strip you of your parental rights, and commit you to a private facility. You will lose Chloe forever."
"Not if I strike first," I said, my hands tightening into fists.
"You can't just go to the local police, Elena," Eleanor said urgently. "Marcus owns the local precinct. The chief of police sits on the board of Oakridge Academy. If you hand them that video, it will disappear into an evidence locker before you leave the building."
"Then where do we go?" I asked.
Eleanor reached into her coat and pulled out a sleek silver flash drive and a formal invitation card stamped with a gold foil crest.
"Tomorrow night is the Oakridge Philanthropy Gala," Eleanor whispered. "The Governor, the Federal District Attorney, the national press, and the entire high-society establishment of Connecticut will be in that ballroom. Marcus and Victoria are planning to publicly announce their foundation merger and Chloe's 'guardianship transition' live on stage."

She pushed the invitation toward me.
"You aren't going to hide, Elena. You are going to crash their party."
