Chapter 8 - THE BROADCASTThe ballroom erupted into chaos. Reporters raised their cameras, flashes strobing like lightning against the crystal chandeliers. Board members whispered frantically, while Victoria tried to grab the microphone from my hand.

"She’s insane!" Victoria shrieked to the crowd, her voice cracking with desperation. "She’s a mentally unstable former servant who has stalked our family for years! Get her off the stage!"

"Sit down, Victoria," I said, without even turning my head to look at her.

I pressed the silver remote clicker inside my hand.

The massive LED screen behind us flickered, cutting out the glossy foundation logo.

In its place, a high-definition video began to play.

It was the raw 4K footage I had captured in the basement cellar.

The entire ballroom gasped in collective horror.

On the 30-foot screen, Victoria Vance appeared clearly, her sharp face contorted in rage as she stood inside the damp, dark brick room. The audio blasted through the ballroom's concert speakers, deafening and crystalline:

SMACK.

The sound of the slap rang through the hall.

"You don't have a choice!" Victoria’s recorded voice screamed from the speakers. "Your father gave you to me. Do you want to spend the night down here in the dark with the rats? Sign it!"

The camera zoomed in on eight-year-old Chloe, crying on the thin mattress, her small hand trembling as she signed the legal guardianship papers under threat of imprisonment.

"Turn it off! Turn it off!" Marcus screamed, lunging toward the AV control booth at the side of the stage.

He was intercepted immediately by two uniformed Connecticut State Troopers who stepped out from behind the velvet curtains.

"Do not move, Mr. Sterling," the Lead Trooper commanded, placing a heavy hand on Marcus's shoulder.

The video on the screen transitioned.

Next played the audio recording from two days prior, capturing Marcus’s voice outside the classroom window:

"She knows the rules. If she doesn't perform, she stays in the cellar room at the academy until she remembers her place."

Followed immediately by Victoria’s smooth, chilling declaration:

"My husband Marcus and I would like to thank everyone for supporting our wonderful daughter, Chloe..."

The silence in the ballroom was absolute.

wealthy donors, school trustees, and politicians stared at the screen in utter disgust and disbelief. The Federal District Judge who had been drinking scotch with Marcus moments earlier backed away from him as if he were covered in plague.

"That's not all," I said into the microphone, my voice steady, uncompromising, and victorious. "The black notebook sitting on the podium right now contains forged signatures, illegal offshore trust transfers, and evidence of a multi-million dollar fraud scheme orchestrated by Marcus Sterling, Victoria Vance, and Dr. Arthur Sterling."

I looked down at Marcus, who was now on his knees on the stage floor, his hands being bound in steel handcuffs by state troopers.

"You said I didn't speak like these people, Marcus," I whispered into the mic. "You were right. I don't speak the language of cowards, thieves, and child abusers."
