Chapter 10 - A New Balance

Six months after the trial concluded, the State Attorney General’s office held a formal awards ceremony in downtown Chicago to honor citizens who had demonstrated exceptional integrity in public and corporate service.
The grand ballroom of the Palmer House was packed with state officials, journalists, and reform advocates. When my name was called to step up to the podium to receive the State Financial Watchdog Award, the applause was deafening.
I stood behind the mahogany podium, looking out over the sea of flashing camera lights and smiling faces. For the first time in my life, I wasn't running an audit, hiding behind corporate anonymity, or waiting for the other shoe to drop.
"People often ask me how I survived taking down my own family's empire," I said into the microphone, my voice echoing clearly across the hall. "The answer is simple. Truth isn't a liability you bury in a ledger. It's the only asset that truly appreciates over time."

“The books are balanced,” the message read. “Starting over looks good on you.”
