That evening, I sat at my apartment desk, looking over the final drafts of the new state regulatory framework I had authored. It was a comprehensive blueprint designed to ensure that no resident deposit could ever be touched by corporate greed or hidden behind shell companies again.
My phone chimed with a text message from Marcus: "Dinner tonight at the old Italian place on Taylor Street? My treat."
I smiled and typed back: "Only if you're paying for the dessert too."
