Chapter 19 - The Next Horizon

The restaurant on Taylor Street was warm, bustling, and filled with the rich aroma of garlic, basil, and roasting espresso beans. Marcus was already sitting at a corner booth near the window, waving me over with a welcoming grin.
"You're late," he joked as I slid into the leather booth across from him.
"Chief Directors are never late, Detective. We simply arrive precisely when our presence is required," I countered, picking up the menu.
We ordered dinner, talking easily about the upcoming federal trials, the new regulatory policies, and the simple, quiet joys of ordinary life. For the first time in years, the past didn't feel like a shadow hanging over my shoulder; it felt like a foundation I had built with my own two hands.
After dinner, as we walked back along the brightly lit avenue under a canopy of early summer stars, Marcus stopped by the curb and looked at me with a warm, steady gaze.
