Chapter 2 - THE RECKONING AT TABLE 42“No,” Conrad whispered, shaking his head frantically as if denying a nightmare. “No, that’s impossible. You were nothing. I made you nothing. You didn’t even finish college!”

I finally set my wine glass down. The faint clink against the table sounded like a gavel falling in a courtroom.
I smoothed down the fabric of my simple navy dress—the deliberate choice I had made to contrast their vulgar displays of wealth—and stood up. At five-foot-eight, wearing worn heels, I suddenly felt taller than the man who had towered over my childhood.
“You’re right, Conrad,” I said, my voice carrying a quiet, lethal resonance that required no microphone. “You threw me out with nothing. No money. No connections. Not even a coat.”
I took a slow step forward down the aisle between Table 42 and the VIP section.
“You told me I would become nothing if I didn't marry Bennett Vale and trade my life for your corporate expansion,” I continued, locking my eyes onto his darting, panicked gaze. “You forgot one crucial detail about people who hit rock bottom, Father. When you have nothing left to lose, you have nothing left to fear.”
Damian’s hands clenched into shaking fists. “You think a fancy title and some military uniform play-acting makes you better than us? You’re still a traitor to this family! You defied Conrad Voss!”
“Defied him?” I let out a low, cold laugh that made Damian flinch. “Damian, I didn't defy him. I outgrew him.”
I stopped three feet away from my father. Up close, I could see the frantic pulse beating in his throat, the fine lines of age and panic carved deeply around his mouth.
“Twenty-one years ago,” I whispered softly, just loud enough for the front rows to hear, “you told me not to come back when the world showed me what I was worth. So, I went out and let the world show me. And do you know what I discovered?”
Conrad couldn't speak. His lips parted, but no sound came out.
“I discovered that your entire empire, your multi-billion-dollar portfolio, and your precious Voss Group... were built on a foundation of sand, corruption, and massive, unpayable debt.” I tilted my head, smiling faintly. “In fact, as of forty-eight hours ago, every single commercial deed, shipping route, and real estate asset owned by Conrad Voss is currently mortgaged to Apex Vanguard.”
Conrad staggered back, colliding hard against the edge of a champagne tower. Glasses wobbled, teetered, and crashed to the floor in an explosion of crystal and sparkling wine, soaking his polished shoes.
“You’re lying,” Conrad gasped, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer terror. “The Board... the directors would never allow—!”
“The board of directors signed the takeover papers this morning, Conrad,” Julian interjected smoothly, stepping down from the altar. “They voted unanimously. Because unlike you, they prefer a leader who doesn't treat human beings like disposable chess pieces.”

The guests began to murmur frantically. Cell phones flickered under tables as opportunistic investors and rival executives realized the seismic shift happening in real-time. The mighty Conrad Voss had just been dethroned by his own discarded daughter.
And the night had only just begun.
