Chapter 2 - The Sound of Silence and the Price of Pride

The high-pitched screech of the microphone feedback sliced through the warm Jalisco air, instantly silencing the laughter of three hundred of Guadalajara’s most elite citizens.

Doña Leonor stood frozen near the edge of the dance floor, her smug, emerald-green smile faltering for a fraction of a second. Next to her, Mauricio—who had finally emerged from the VIP lounge with a glass of champagne in hand—looked up, his eyes widening in confusion as he saw his bride standing alone at the podium.

"Good afternoon, everyone," Valeria’s voice rang out, crystal clear, echoing off the stone walls of the historic hacienda. There was no tremor in her tone. It was as cold as ice, carrying a heavy, commanding weight that demanded absolute attention.

"Before we begin the ceremony that was supposed to bind my life to Mauricio’s, I would like to draw your attention to a masterpiece of social engineering."

A murmur rippled through the crowd. Mauricio took a step forward, his face flushing. "Valeria, what are you doing? Get down from there, this isn’t the time for a joke," he called out, trying to keep his voice low, but his microphone-free words were swallowed by the breeze.

Valeria ignored him completely, her gaze locked onto her husband-to-be.

"If you could all please look at the head table," Valeria continued, pointing a manicured hand toward the center of the canopy. "You will see nine seats of honor. Nine seats decorated with white orchids, crystal glassware, and gold-engraved name cards. They belong to Mauricio’s distinguished family. The 'elite' of our city."

She paused, letting the silence hang.

"Now," Valeria’s voice dropped an octave, dripping with quiet fury. "I want you all to turn your heads exactly ten meters to the left. Look past the beautiful floral arches, past the sparkling chandeliers, and look right behind that massive stone pillar. Yes, right next to the service entrance where the waiters are bringing out the trash."

Three hundred pairs of eyes shifted.

There, sitting on two bare, folding wooden chairs, were Don Arturo and Doña Carmen. Don Arturo was nervously adjusting his cheap, department-store suit, while Doña Carmen looked down at her lap, her eyes glistening with unshed tears of deep humiliation.

"Those two people," Valeria’s voice boomed, sending shivers down the spines of the onlookers, "are my parents. The people who raised me. The people who taught me dignity, hard work, and self-respect. And those two broken chairs are the seats assigned to them by my future mother-in-law, Doña Leonor, and fully approved by my fiancé, Mauricio."

"Valeria, shut up!" Doña Leonor hissed, stepping toward the podium, her aristocratic poise completely shattering. "You are making a fool of yourself! Step down this instant!"

"Am I, Leonor?" Valeria smiled, a sharp, dangerous expression. "Or am I finally giving you the spotlight you so desperately crave?"

THE CLIFFHANGER HOOK: As Mauricio rushed toward the stage to grab the microphone, Valeria reached into her bridal bouquet and pulled out a folded white document—one that would destroy the Monterrey family’s pristine reputation forever.
