Chapter 1 - THE SILENT WITNESS OF WESTBRIDGE TOWER

The heavy mahogany doors of Adrian Vale’s private office swallowed the sound of the storm outside. The city of Chicago was wrapped in a suffocating winter fog, but inside the forty-eighth floor, the temperature felt sub-zero.

Adrian did not move from his spot near the desk. His eyes, dark and sharp as cut glass, remained locked on Claire.

"I'll ask you one more time, Claire," Adrian said, his voice dropping into that low, dangerous register that had made syndicate bosses twice his age sweat through their custom suits. "Who touched you?"

Claire swallowed hard, tasting copper and dust in the back of her throat. The charcoal-gray folder lay untouched between them on the polished oak. She could feel the outline of the Dawson acquisition papers beneath her fingertips—forty-six million dollars in legal assets, a multi-national conglomerate merger that was supposed to secure Vale Meridian Holdings' dominance for the next decade.

Instead, it felt like a tombstone.

"It wasn't business, Mr. Vale," Claire whispered, her voice cracking. "It had nothing to do with the firm."

"Everything that happens in this city within five miles of my name has to do with this firm," Adrian stepped closer, his broad frame casting a long shadow over her. "And everything that happens to the people who protect my interests becomes my personal war. You are my executive secretary. You’ve kept my life running for six years. You didn’t walk into my office bleeding at midnight because you tripped on a curb."

He reached out, his fingers catching her wrist with terrifying gentleness. He turned her arm over, exposing the purple-black bruising shaped like fingers—a handprint. A man's handprint.

Adrian’s jaw tightened. A muscle jumped in his cheek.

"Marcus?" Adrian murmured, naming his chief enforcer without missing a beat.

"No!" Claire gasped, pulling her arm back defensively. "No, it wasn't Marcus. Please, Adrian... just let me drop the contract and go home. If you look into this—if you pull the threads on this—you won't like what unravels."

"I don't like surprises, Claire," Adrian said coldly, turning to grab his desk phone. "And I especially don't like people hurting my inner circle. If you won't give me a name, I'll pull the traffic cams from West Monroe Street myself. Within twenty minutes, I’ll have the plates, the face, and the pulse of whoever did this."

"If you do that," Claire cried out, stepping directly into his path, tears finally spilling over her lashes, "you'll force a war inside your own house."

Adrian froze. The phone hovered an inch from his ear.

"What did you say?"

"The person who ordered this," Claire whispered, closing her eyes as the secret tore its way out of her chest, "wasn't an enemy from the streets. It was someone sitting at your family dinner table."
